Ealing Trailfinders left the Channel Islands empty-handed after they came up against a powerful Jersey side in rampant form under the lights at St Peters.

Ben Ward’s side led for a short while in the first half after Iain Grieves scored, but once Harvey Biljon’s team found their rhythm they took a grip on the match which they didn’t relinquish.

Jersey kicked off and within two minutes were ahead when fullback Aaron Penberthy banged over a penalty within two minutes. He stretched the lead further on 13 minutes with his second penalty after wing Ross Adair had led a Jersey counter-attack.

Ealing Trailfinders worked their way into the match and dominated for 10 minutes before Grieves was driven over from a line-out. Alex Davies converted the try, but Penberthy hit back to put the host back in the lead with his third penalty.

Jersey stretched their lead further on the stroke of half-time when their forwards hammered the Ealing Trailfinders line and eventually were rewarded with a penalty try that Penberthy converted to stretch the lead to 16-7 at half-time.

Jersey increased the lead further still early in the second half when prop Sam Lockwood powered over from close range after the Jersey forwards had enjoyed a period of dominance.

Ealing Trailfinders fought back and after Toby Howley-Berridge and Luke Daniels threatened the Jersey lines with strong running, George Porter was held up on the Jersey line.

As the match wore on Jersey reserve Uili Kolo’ofai drove over from close range and then with two minutes left on the clock fly-half Brendan Cope rounded off an attack after Jersey’s backs had a belated chance to stretch their legs.

Phil Chesters scored a late try to salvage a four-try bonus point as Nottingham staged a second-half comeback to take all five points on offer with five tries in 20 minutes.

Ealing Trailfinders led 12-3 through tries from Alex and Alun Walker, but Martin Haag’s side found their rhythm midway through the second half to turn the match around.

Nottingham kicked off and enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges, but when they tried to drive their way over from line-outs first Jamie Kilbane and then James Stephenson cleared up to take play up to the half-way line.

At the first scrum Ealing Trailfinders’ pack forced their opposite numbers backwards to win a penalty that Ben Ward cleared to the Nottingham 22. Carwyn Jones’ catch allowed the pack to drive Nottingham forwards backwards and after Iain Grieve was stopped short, Alex Walker wriggled his way across the line.

Mugford hit back with a penalty for Nottingham’s first points and while Toby Freeman broke the Ealing Trailfinders line with a strong run, Luke Daniels hauled him down before Chris York and Chesters combined to bundle Heath Stevens into touch.

Stephenson nearly finished from a cross-kick and Grieve was then stopped short from another catch and drive. Neither side were able to add to the score as the first half drew to a close, though Ealing Trailfinders’ back-line was able to put the Nottingham defence under pressure.

Nottingham scrum-half Darryl Veenendaal started the second half with a break that Pia Iongi was unable to collect, but Alun Walker grabbed the next score when he raced home down the line from an exchange of passes with Carwyn Jones at the front of a line-out.

Veenendaal continued to be a nuisance and from one of his breaks the ball was sent wide and Freeman picked a strong angle to run in for a try that Mugford converted.

The try boosted the visitors’ confidence and number eight Paul Grant added a second from a driven line-out catch to give them the lead for the first time in the match.

Ben Woods extended their lead further when he raced in an intercept try and he added his second soon after to cap a swift counter-attack to put Nottingham fully in control and ensure the four-try bonus point.

Grant’s second try came with seven minutes remaining, but Ealing Trailfinders rallied to ensure they didn’t finish empty-handed.

Hooker Rhys Lawrence was the next player to be driven over from a line-out catch and drive and with two minutes remaining Will Harries led a counter-attack Stephenson continued the move and Chesters was on hand to race away and score in the corner.

Ealing Trailfinders returned from their trip across Kew Bridge with a vital four-point win against London Welsh at Old Deer Park that takes them off the bottom of the Greene King IPA Championship.

Former Exiles scrum-half Alex Davies led the way with 17 points from his boot and after both teams improved after a scrappy first half there were tries after the break from Alex Bradley and James Stephenson.

Davies kicked off and by the end of the first half his was the only name on the scoresheet after he landed four penalties for the only points of the half.

His first came after four minutes when Welsh were penalised for holding on as they sought to clear their half.

The points set Ealing Trailfinders up for a good opening quarter and some judicious kicking kept the Exiles penned back in their half, while the visiting defence kept out Welsh’s attack that was led by USA international Thretton Palamo, who was making his debut in the centre.

Davies added his second penalty just before the 20-minute match. Neither side appeared able to tame the wet and windy conditions to keep hold of possession and the nearest either side came to breaching the line came when Ealing Trailfinders wing James Stephenson intercepted and set up a kick-chase that Welsh fullback Seb Jewell was the first to.

Nonetheless it kept Ben Ward’s side on the front foot and they were duly rewarded when Davies kept the score ticking over with another penalty after Ealing Trailfinders’ pack had driven the London Welsh eight back in the scrum.

The scrum-half had one more chance after Welsh were whistled for infringing at a line-out and he stretched Ealing Trailfinders lead to 12-0 at the half.

A superb break by Alex Bradley and then Stephenson set up position in the Welsh 22, Luke Daniels broke the line, but after Welsh number eight Kieran Murphy was yellow-carded for infringing, Davies scored his fifth penalty.

Joe Carlisle opened Welsh’s scoring with a penalty, but immediately made way for one-time England international Olly Barkley, who made a quick impact by setting Chris Elder running down the left wing.

He failed to collect his kick ahead and after they opted to kick a penalty to touch, Adam Preocanin pinched their throw and Stephenson led the counter-attack to cleat their half.

Soon after from a catch and drive Bradley was driven over for a try that Davies converted, then when Welsh went back on the defence Ealing Trailfinders’ defence stood tall and Stephenson once again led the break-out from defence.

Stephenson was rewarded for his endeavours with 10 minutes to go. Phil Chesters, Preocanin and Arthur Lewis led the counter-attack and the wing swooped onto Ward’s cross-kick and showed great strength to hold off two tacklers to cross for his first Ealing Trailfinders try.

Ealing Trailfinders were denied their second win of the season in the dying second’s when a penalty by Bedford Blues’ Steffan Jones maintained his side’s strong start to the season.

Tristan Roberts opened the scoring with a penalty, Toby Howley-Berridge and Alun Walker scored a try each and Alex Davies slotted a conversion and two penalties before Jones struck late on.

Ben Ward’s side started strongly and Roberts’ penalty opened the scoring after seven minutes following a powerful showing by the pack in the scrum. Three minutes later though Jake Sharp levelled the scores with a penalty of his own after a break by George Perkins.

Ealing Trailfinders’ response was the best possible. Former Blues wing James Stephenson cut through their defence and after support from Alex Bradley, Tristan Roberts picked out Howley-Berridge with a pin-point kick to score the first try of the match.

They built on the lead quickly when Alun Walker crashed over following excellent work from a driven line-out catch.

Bedford hit back and Bradley was sent to the sin-bin and while he was off the Blues scored their first try. Scrum-half Jordan Burns spotted space and galloped up the pitch to set up Piers O’Connor for a chance. He was stopped just short of the line, but popped the ball to wing Dean Adamson who scored in the corner.

Mike Rayer’s team scored their second in the 24th minute. Number eight Hayden Thompson-Stringer burst off the back of a scrum and off-loaded to O’Conor who had a clear run to the line. Jake Sharp converted both scores to put the visitors ahead for the first time at 17-15.

Davies missed a kick, but then landed his next effort to ensure the hosts were 18-17 ahead at the break. A stalemate ensued for the opening quarter of the second half and the first points of the second half came on 71 minutes when Jones landed a penalty.

Davies put the hosts back in front with six minutes to go, but with the last play Bedford broke and while the ball went out of play Mike Howard pinched the line-out and helped win a penalty that Jones slotted for the win.

Ealing Trailfinders returned home empty-handed from an away fixture for the first time since their return to the Greene King IPA Championship.

Rhys Crane, Danny Kenny and Phil Chesters scored a try apiece, but the side left themselves too much to do after a first half which ended with the home side having already claimed the four-try bonus point on a night in which fly-half Glyn Hughes kicked six from six.

Ben Ward’s side started strongly and after Adam Preocanin charged down a Glyn Hughes clearance, hooker Alun Walker was held up over the line. Nonetheless after a few more phases of play Tristan Roberts open the scoring with a penalty.

Moseley showed their attacking prowess when Hughes broke and chipped the defence, but Alex Walker was back in time to clear the danger. The defence continued to stand firm until Drew Cheshire found a gap and raced through to score.

Ealing Trailfinders hit back almost immediately when quick hands from Roberts to Arthur Ellis and then Danny Kenny set Crane running to score his fourth try of the season.

Tom Wheatcroft kept the visitors’ momentum going, but after kicking a penalty to the corner Moseley’s Jack Lea scored from a catch and drive. It set up a period of dominance from the home side and Arron Pinches and Mike Penn ran in tries before half-time to open an 18-point lead.

The second half began slowly, but Ealing Trailfinders scored the first try when Kenny from a short line-out. A third followed soon after when Chesters scored in the corner and Davies converted.

Hughes banged over another penalty and Roberts replied with one of his own to keep Ealing Trailfinders in bonus-point range. However, David Brazier wiggled over for Moseley’s fifth try and from then on the hosts were content to run the clock down for the win.

Phil Chesters and Nathan Hannay scored tries as Ealing Trailfinders earned a losing bonus point at home to promotion favourites Bristol Rugby.

However, tries from Jack Wallace and Tom Varndell in quick succession in the second half gave Bristol the initiative and Gavin Henson’s kicking allowed them to keep Ben Ward’s side at arm’s length despite the best efforts of the hosts.

After only six minutes Chesters swooped on a loose ball and used his pace to outstrip one-time England winger Tom Varndell to score the opening tray. After Tristan Roberts converted it, the defence had its first serious test, but the home team’s defence held out Bristol centre Jack Tovey.

James Love stretched the lead further with a long-distance penalty, but the visitors grabbed a toe hold in the match on the half-hour mark when Henson banged over his first penalty. A second just before half-time ensured that Bristol were in touch at 10-6 behind at the break.

Early in the second half Ealing Trailfinders’ defence again denied Bristol their first try as good defence stop them from capitalising on an overlap close to the tryline. However, Henson knocked over a third penalty to close Bristol to within a point with half an hour remaining.

However, Ealing Trailfinders rediscovered their rhythm and began to enjoy a period of pressure that was eventually rewarded when second-row Hannay bundled his way over from close range.

Again Bristol stirred themselves into action and Wallace raced over following Will Cliff’s break and soon after Varndell picked a strong line off Tovey to receive his pass, race away from the defence to score and put Bristol in front for the first time.

Roberts scored two penalties in quick succession, but Adrian Jarvis score one of his own to stretch Bristol’s lead to 26-21 and establish himself as Bristol’s all-time leading scorer with 709 points.

Still the hosts pressed and late on James Stephenson was denied a late try for a forward pass.

For the third time in three visits Ealing Trailfinders returned from Yorkshire with a bonus point after pushing an in-form Doncaster Knights hard over 80 minutes at Castle Park.

Ben Ward’s team led 10-6 at half-time after a pushover try from Nathan Buck, but the hosts fought back in the second half to open up a 13-point lead. Callum Wilson scored a late try to move to losing bonus point territory and while Ealing Trailfinders put the Knights under pressure over the last 10 minutes they were unable to break through.

Emergency fullback Alex Davies opened the scoring after two minutes when he landed a penalty, but Doncaster showed a flash of their threat when wing Tyson Lewis raced away after exploiting a gap.

Davies then had the opportunity to stretch the lead after Doncaster fullback Paul Jarvis was yellow-carded, but struck it wide. Even so Ealing Trailfinders capitalised on their numeric superiority when a whole team effort drove Buck over from a rolling maul off a line-out.

The Knights began to find their rhythm as the half wore on and fly-half Michael Heaney knocked over two penalties as their pack began to impose themselves.

Will Davis became the second player to be yellow-carded, but Ealing Trailfinders defence bundled number 8 Ollie Steadman in to touch when Doncaster tried a rolling maul of their own and then held out till half-time.

Doncaster grabbed the lead soon after the restart when Lewis’ mazy run set up good field position, which Latu Makaafi capitalised on to extend his lead at the top of the Championship’s try-scoring charts.

He added a second not long after when he burrowed over from close range and with Heaney adding two conversions and another penalty the hosts enjoyed a 13-point lead at the hour mark.

Ealing Trailfinders began to re-imposed themselves on proceedings and after Rhys Crane won turnover ball it was worked to substitute Callum Wilson who raced away to score.

It set up a tense final 10 minutes and while the visitors pressured the Doncaster line at the end the hosts defence stayed strong.

Ealing Trailfinders recorded their first victory since their return to the Greene King IPA Championship by running in three tries against Cornish Pirates.

Wings Phil Chesters and Rhys Crane picked up where they left off a week ago against Yorkshire Carnegie by scoring a try apiece and the pack topped off a memorable performance by winning a penalty try from a scrum.

After a frenzied opening Pirates opened the scoring when fly-half Will Cargill knocked over a penalty from long range. Ealing Trailfinders hit back immediately when Phil Chesters chipped ahead, caught his kick and raced away from the covering defence for his second score in two weeks.

Alex Davies converted the try and then stretched the lead further with the first of his three penalties.

The visitors regrouped and showed their positive intent by kicking two penalties to the corner to attempt to score a catch and drive try. However, on both occasions the hosts’ defence stood firm to keep them out.

Their luck was in on their third attempt shortly before halftime when number 8 Laurie McGlone was driven over. Cargill slotted the conversion to tie the score at 10-10, but on the stroke of half-time Davies scored his second penalty to ensure Ealing Trailfinders led 13-10 at the break.

Soon after the restart Nathan Buck was stopped short of the line as the home pack flexed their muscles, but a second try arrived when Crane took advantage of a wayward kick down the right wing.

Pirates again tried their luck from a line-out, but again Ealing Trailfinders defence held out and Davies stretched their lead further still with his third penalty.

Reserve fly-half Kieran Hallett gave Pirates some home of a late comeback when Jack Arnott swept onto his cross-kick to score, but with the last play of the match Ealing Trailfinders’ pack won a penalty try that along with Davies’ conversion meant they denied the visitors a losing bonus point.

Ealing Trailfinders won their second point of the season when they scored four tries away to Yorkshire Carnegie, who scored six of their own.

Nathan Hannay crossed on his first return to Headingley after moving to Vallis Way over the summer. Phil Chesters added the second, Danny Kenny the third and Rhys Crane dotted down the fourth with two minutes left on the clock.

It took just three minutes for the hosts to open the lead when Max Green set up long-serving winger David Doherty to run in the first points. Ealing Trailfinders hit back quickly and Alex Davies took advantage of some Carnegie ill-discipline to knock over two penalties to give the visitors the lead.

The scoring continued when fly-half Harry Leonard set fullback Jonah Holmes running for the second try, before number 8 Ryan Burrows found scrum-half Max Green to run in his first try for the club.

Ben Ward’s side regrouped and quickly found themselves with a man advantage after Burrows was yellow-carded. They closed the gap when former Carnegie man Hannay forced his way over from a tapped penalty and with Davies converting Ealing Trailfinders closed the gap to six points.

Holmes showed his class once again to set up centre Andy Forsyth to hold off his tacklers to score and secure the four-try bonus point. With Leonard converting Carnegie enjoyed a 26-13 lead at half-time.

It took time for both sides to find a breakthrough after the break, but it was the home side who ended the stalemate when Burrows raced away from the halfway line to send Seb Steggman over in the corner for his first try for the club.

Ealing Trailfinders fought back again when Phil Chesters regathered his chip ahead to open his account in the Championship. Charlie Beech then became the second Carnegie player to be sent to the sin-bin and the visitors took advantage when Danny Kenny touched down from the back of a rolling maul after a fine lineout catch by Llewelyn Jones.

Holmes then set up Phil Nilsen for Carnegie’s sixth, but the last word went to Ealing Trailfinders. Alun Walker dummied, fended and then found Crane who reached the line to ensure that for the second time in three weeks the west London side did not leave Yorkshire empty-handed.

Ealing Trailfinders went down to a five-try loss to their rivals from over Kew Bridge in their first home match of the Greene King IPA Championship season.

Iain Grieve and Will Harries scored two first-half tries to stay in contention at half-time and Alex Walker scored late on, but the Exiles showed their strength and experience and a return to the form that earned them a play-off place last season after losing to Mosely in the opening fixture.

Ben Ward’s side made a strong start and fierce tackles from Irish pair Danny Barnes and Danny Kenny set the early tone, but Tristan Roberts pulled an early penalty wide and Iain Grieve was pulled up as he crossed the line after a forward pass from Matt Thompson.

The Exiles opened the scoring with their first attack as wing Matt Williams was first to Peter Lyon’s deft grubber into the in-goal area, but Ealing Trailfinders were soon in front when Grieve was on the end of a rolling maul.

The score instilled the hosts with confidence and Harries and Chris York both tested the Scottish defence with strong runs. It was the visitors who scored next though when Jason Harries was first to Lydon’s up and under to score in the corner. Soon after Lydon knocked over a penalty to stretch their lead further.

London Scottish enjoyed the ascendancy for the rest of the half, but Will Harries showed great strength to hold off three would-be defenders to score in the corner to close the gap.

The Exiles had the last word in the half when captain Mark Bright scored from the back of a rolling maul, which along with Lydon’s conversion meant that the visitors enjoyed a 10-point lead at the break.

Ealing Trailfinders enjoyed the upper hand at the start of the second half and while they were unable to break through, London Scottish were equally culpable of spurning chances, first when Locke fumbled close to the line and then when Adam Kwasnicki overthrew a line-out.

Bright broke the deadlock with his second in identical fashion and substitute David Hallam stretched the visitors lead further when he popped up on the shoulder of Matthew Heeks close to the line.

Phil Chesters nearly opened his account for the season, but was stopped close to the line. It marker an upturn in their fortunes, but the Exiles’ defence held off Ealing Trailfinders best efforts until Alex Walker spied a hole in their line and scooted through it. The final word went to the Exiles though when Lydon slotted his second penalty on the final whistle.
