Match Report

Ealing Trailfinders ran out 17-53 winners over Ampthill at Dillingham Park in Round 15 of the Championship this afternoon.

A hat-trick from Ben Harris, a brace from Rob Farrar, and tries from Michael Dykes, Mike Willemse, Jordy Reid and Angus Kernohan meant Trailfinders came away with all five points.

Ben Ward’s men extend their lead to 13 points at the top of the Championship table.

There was an electric start to proceedings in Ampthill when Ben Harris broke free down the left-hand touch line. He found Dykes with an inside ball and the fullback raced over inside 30 seconds.

Ampthill hit back moments later; fly-half Josh Barton spotted some space in-behind and chipped over the top. He collected the bouncing ball and got the hosts on the scoresheet.

Moments later, Trailfinders’ captain Willemse powered over from close range after multiple pick and go phases.

The visitors extended their lead when Reid broke off the maul, and he was helped over the line by Matas Jurevicius.

After a sin bin for Ampthill’s Charles Rylands, Trailfinders played some free-flowing rugby. Farrar secured the bonus-point before the break as he found himself on the end of a two-man overlap.

Half-time: Ampthill 5-26 Ealing Trailfinders

There was also a fast start to the second half. This time, Harris was able to weave his way through multiple defenders and cross the line with Ampthill players hanging from him.

Just five minutes later, he had another. This time the ball was moved wide from a line-out and the winger found himself in space and ran in untouched.

Keronhan came off the bench hungry to make an impact. Tom Collins put a grubber in behind which was not dealt with by the Ampthill defence, allowing Kernohan to drop on the ball and score.

With ten to play, Farrar found himself out on the wing, and he did not look out of place! The flanker bumped off a defender, raced to the line and dived over to score his brace.

Trailfinders did not take their foot off the gas throughout the 80 minutes, and with the clock in red, quick hands saw the ball moved out to the right-wing and Harris completed his second-half hat-trick.
