Ealing Trailfinders were unable to give their fans a festive treat when they slipped to only their second loss at Vallis Way.

Curtis Wilson scored a try and Aaron Penberthy added a conversion and three penalties, but it wasn’t enough to stop a determined Pirates side who were inspired by livewire scrumhalf Stuart Townsend.

Ben Ward’s side did at least finish with a losing bonus point that takes them to 31 points in the Greene King IPA Championship.

Wilson came close to opening the scoring early on, but he was unable to reach Alex Walker’s grubber before it ran dead.

Instead it was Pirates who struck first when Toby May finished in the corner after scrumhalf Stuart Townsend had sparked their back line with a tapped penalty on the halfway line.

Townsend continued to cause problems and Laurence May also came close to breaking through before Ealing Trailfinders’ defence had to bundle Alex Cheesman into touch close to their line.

Soon after Pirates hooker Tom Channon was held up after a driven line-out, as was Marlen Walker as the Pirates continued to set the tempo.

Ealing Trailfinders began to work their way back into the match and Aaron Penberthy slotted his first penalty after the Pirates defence was penalised for offside.

The home defence continued to work hard as Pirates continued to apply the pressure, but neither side added to the score before the break.

The home side came out and immediately raised their intensity. Alun Walker came close to the hosts first try, before Penberthy kicked them ahead early in the second period.

Pirates Laurence May replied almost immediately with his first penalty and then picked out wing Jack Arnott with a carefully threaded grubber kick.

Penberthy kicked his third penalty and then after Arthur Ellis had broken into the Pirates half, Wilson was set free down the right wing to score in the corner.

The fly-half’s conversion put Ealing Trailfinders ahead for the first time, but Pirates prop Tyler Gendall wiggled over after Joe Munro had twice stopped the Cornish backline from breaking through.

Ealing Trailfinders did their best to fight back as the clock ran down, but the Pirates controlled possession and ran the clock down by kicking deep whenever they could to stop the home side facing a packed defence whenever they ran the ball back.

Ealing Trailfinders ensured they go into the festive period top of Pool 5 in the British and Irish Cup after they ran in five tries against a determined Bedford Blues team.

Curtis Wilson, Mark Bright, Seb Nagle-Taylor and Phil Chesters scored tries in the first half and Matt Cornish came off the bench to add a fifth in the second. Aaron Penberthy also weighed in with three conversions and three penalties.

Ealing Trailfinders quickly took control of the match. After three minutes Penberthy picked out Wilson with a cross-kick and the wing collected and shrugged off the Bedford Blues defence to score in the corner.

Penberthy added the conversion from out wide, but the Blues hit back immediately when Myles Dorrian converted a penalty.

The home fly-half replied with a penalty of his own minutes later and following another penalty Bright was driven over from the back of a maul.

Bedford Blues hit back and their pack peppered the line with attacks from close range, but Alex Walker made a vital try-saving tackle to deny the visitors their opening score.

The Blues continued to attack the line and while flanked Ed Taylor knocked on at the line, Dorrian scored his second penalty to reduce the arrears.

The home pack won another penalty from a scrum and from the resulting driven lineout Nagle-Taylor touched down. Minutes later Glen Townson nearly wrapped up the up the bonus point, but he was held up after driving over the line.

Ealing Trailfinders continued to attack and after the forwards had their turn Penberthy set the backline running and Lewis Jones put Chesters away to score in the corner.

Nagle-Taylor marked the start of the second half with two rasping runs through the Bedford Blues defence and while Chesters was unable to capitalise on a Penberthy cut-out pass, the fly-half converted his second penalty to open the second-half scoring.

The Blues responded with another concerted period of pressure. Captain Mike Le Bourgeois wiggled his way close to the line and after wrapping round his backline Dorrian raced away to score in the corner.

Alex Penny came off the bench and immediately came up with an important turnover from a Blues scrum. It allowed Ealing Trailfinders to build some pressure and Penberthy knocked over his third penalty to keep the visitors at arm’s length.

Cornish scored the fifth try with only his second touch after coming off the bench, but Bedford Blues continued to push forward and Jake Sharp came off the bench to score his side’s second.

Jordan Burns raced away for Bedford Blues’ third try just ahead of the final whistle, but the five points mean that Ealing Trailfinders now sit five points ahead of Yorkshire Carnegie with two matches remaining in the pool.

Ealing Trailfinders left it late, but eventually ground down a determined London Welsh side to grab four of the five points on offer to maintain their position of third in the Greene King IPA Championship.

After 75 minutes the pack won a penalty that Aaron Penberthy converted to take the lead for the first time at 13-11.

As the clock ran down and Welsh tried desperately to fight back, Penberthy held his nerve to score his third penalty and then with the final kick of the game, wiggled his way onto his left foot to drop a goal that meant the visitors left empty-handed.

It didn’t take London Welsh long to open the scoring. Fullback Martyn Thomas ran back a high kick and broke into the Ealing Trailfinders half. He was stopped by a combination of Alex Walker and Luke Daniels, but hooker Nathan Morris was on hand to collect the pop pass and run home.

The Exiles used the try to assert their dominance early on, notably through their attacking line-out and Joe Carlisle knocked over a penalty to extend their early advantage.

Ealing Trailfinders’ first chance came after Aled Jenkins charged down a Carlisle clearance. Matt Cornish took it on, but the team were able to capitalise. They maintained the pressure though and Penberthy slotted a penalty soon after.

The points preceded a good period of pressure for Ealing Trailfinders, who found their rhythm with backs and forwards linking up together and eventually they were rewarded when Penberthy scored his second penalty.

On the stroke of half-time Penberthy had the chance to put the hosts into the lead for the first time, but his kick rebounded back off a post to leave the Exiles ahead at the break.

The second half continued as the first ended with Ealing Trailfinders enjoying the better of the possession and territory, albeit without converting it into points.

Welsh stretched their lead when Carlisle scored his second penalty and then the match swung back and forth without either side able to grab the match by the scruff of the neck.

Just over 10 minutes from time Welsh number 8 Kieran Murphy was yellow carded and after the penalty was kicked to touch. After the initial drive from Willie Ryan, Penberthy was stopped illegally short of the line.

From the scrum the pack drove hard to win a penalty try and Penberthy converted to put Ealing Trailfinders into the lead for the first time.

The pack won another scrum penalty two minutes from time and Penberthy converted the penalty to stretch the lead to five points with two to go. He then dropped a goal off his left foot to extend the advantage further still on the stroke of half-time.

Ealing Trailfinders took their unbeaten run to six matches by running in eight tries against a dogged Rotherham Titans side, who claimed a four-try bonus of their own.

It means Ben Ward’s side stay third in the Greene King IPA Championship with two weeks till their next match, away to Nottingham on Friday 18 November.

Captain Mark Bright started the try-scoring early on and Aled Jenkins and Curtis Wilson both scored a brace of tries. Rhys Lawrence, Luke Daniels and Luke Carter also got on the scoresheet to help take the home side’s points up to the half-century.

Ealing Trailfinders started with the wind in their faces and Rotherham Titans were happy to use their tailwind to build pressure with kicks. They had an early chance to open the scoring, but fly-half Will Robinson hooked a penalty wide.

Instead it was the hosts who scored first. Carter wiggled through a gap, Lawrence took play up to the line and Bright crashed over after the ball was recycled.

Lawrence then added the second soon after to put Ealing Trailfinders well in control before the quarter hour mark.

Rotherham Titans were in the mood to play and Robinson and fullback Will Thomas both looked to try their hands in attack. However, their first points came from loose-head prop Toby Williams as the Yorkshiremen counter-attacked swiftly.

Jenkins hit back though with his fourth of the season, ghosting through the Rotherham Titans defence and Daniels then guaranteed the four-try bonus with a show and go before out-pacing the Titans cover defence.

They maintained the pressure and from another Daniels counter-attack and the fullback set Wilson free to race in to score against his former club.

There was a slow start to the second half and neither side was able to build much momentum, though eventually Rotherham Titans’ flanker Dan Grange was driven over to end the stalemate.

Ealing Trailfinders regathered and after a powerful run from James Cordy-Redden put Titans on the backfoot, Jenkins jinked his way through for his second score. Wilson then grabbed his second when Daniels again set him free to race home in the corner.

Rotherham hooker Luke Cole was driven over from a line-out with 10 minutes to go and it meant that visitors had the scent of a four-try bonus as the clock ticked down.

The home side had the final word though as Carter latched onto Aaron Penberthy’s cross-kick, with the fly-half’s conversion bringing up the half-century of points.

With the last play Cole scored again for Rotherham Titans to ensure they returned north with a losing bonus point.

Ealing Trailfinders held off a Bedford Blues fightback to record their fifth win in a row and go up to third in the Greene King IPA Championship table.

Rhys Lawrence and Aled Jenkins scored in the first half and Alex Penny ran in the winner in the second half, while Aaron Penberthy weighed in with nine points with his boot.

The Blues fought back in a much improved second-half performance, but Ealing Trailfinders’ defence held them out till the very last play.

The hosts immediately went on the attack and Curtis Wilson nearly went over in the corner, but the Bedford Blues cover defence bundled him into touch. However, Jacob Fields overthrew the lineout and his opposite number Lawrence was happy to accept the invite to bundle his way over for the opening score.

Bedford hit back when Myles Dorrian knocked over a penalty, but Penberthy landed his first of the day soon after to restore the seven-point advantage.

Luke Daniels knocked on after swift hands from Joe Munro and Jenkins had set him free and Wilson then cut a strong line through the Bedford defence to keep it on the back foot.

Both teams continued to test each other’s defence up to the half-hour mark, but it wasn’t till Aled Jenkins finished off a flowing move that he started that the scoreboard ticked over again.

The centre wiggled his way through the Bedford defence and found Lawrence. He moved the ball on to Carwyn Jones and the second-row showed deft hands to release Jenkins who had looped round to race home.

Bedford roared back at the start of the second half and Alex Walker needed to be alert to clear up a George Perkins kick through. Dorrian scored his second penalty of the match and then Oli Dodge rounded off a good period of pressure by finding a gap to race through.

Lawrence came close to being driven over for his second try, but good work from Hayden Thompson-Stringer stopped him short of the line. The Ealing Trailfinders pack tried twice more, but on both occasions they were unable to find a way through the Bedford defence.

Burns and Perkins teamed up to lead a counter-attack that finished when Dorrian brought the Blues to within a point.

Daniels set James Cordy-Redden free, but again Bedford’s defence stood tall. Ealing Trailfinders third try came shortly afterwards though as Penny popped up in midfield to race home from Chris York’s flick pass.

Reigning Players’ Player of the Year Adam Preocanin came off the bench for his first appearance of the season and immediately came up with a vital lineout steal and Cordy-Redden then made a vital intercept close to the line as Bedford attacked in the dying moments.

Blues’ hooker George Edgson went over at the death and while it meant they were able to claim a losing point, there was no time left for them to go for the win.

Ealing Trailfinders scored 32 unanswered points as they fought back in the second half to beat Yorkshire Carnegie in their first British and Irish Cup match of the season.

After Carnegie substitute Mike Mayhew scored early in the second half Ben Ward’s side turned around a 28-12 deficit by running in five tries before Mayhew scored his second late on.

Even then Ealing Trailfinders had the poise to claim the last word with the last try of the day through Lewis Jones.

The action had barely started when captain for the day Chris York opened the scoring when he popped up to intercept a loose pass and run in between the posts.

Both teams continued to press each other, though it was the home side who were in the ascendancy in the early stages. However, despite good breaks from Rhys Crane and Lewis Jones it was Carnegie who scored next.

Flanker Andy Saull was first to a loose-ball around a ruck. He hammered it down the pitch and the ball bounced perfectly for Oli Goss to collect and race away.

They struck again just before the half-hour when scrum-half Max Green got behind the Ealing Trailfinders defence, Warren Seals kept the move going and Jack Whetton off-loaded for Ollie Stedman to score.

The hosts hit back immediately. New signing Seb Nagle-Taylor broke the line from a line-out move, Josh Davies took the ball on further and after the forwards took over Rodman was driven over to reduce the arrears.

Carnegie began to exert their dominance and while Lewis Jones made a try-saving tackle on his opposite number Andy Forsyth, Carnegie managed to find their way across the line for a third time before half-time through hooker Ross Graham.

Luke Peters made another vital tackle on Forsyth early in the second period and after York stole a Carnegie line-out, Davies’ box-kick gave the home side good field position. However, the Carnegie defence held out and then went up the other end to score a fourth through reserve hooked Mike Mayhew.

Ealing Trailfinders hit back with their third try after Davies tapped a penalty and Phil Chesters popped up on his shoulder to run home. Debutant Nagle-Taylor then ensured a four-try bonus point when he peeled round the front of a line-out to crash over.

Will Magie sent Chesters free on the counter-attack and after the pack pounded the Carnegie line, Davies sniped round the blindside to mark his first start with a try and put Ealing Trailfinders back in the lead. Magie then knocked over a penalty to stretch the advantage further.

Carnegie fought back strongly and were camped on the Ealing Trailfinders line. In a flash though the momentum changed. Callum Wilson made a try-saving tackle on Mayhew and then Crane swept to intercept and celebrate his birthday with a try.

Davies his scored his second with a cheeky grubber behind the defence that he was first to and Wilson then came up with another thumping tackle to stop Carnegie breaking away.

Mayhew burrowed over for his second as Yorkshire launched a late assault on the Ealing Trailfinders line, but Lewis Jones teamed up with his namesake Carwyn to drive over for a late score on the final whistle.

Ealing Trailfinders recorded their second victory of the season when they ran in three tries against Doncaster Knights, last season’s Greene King IPA Championship runners-up.

Joe Munro scored a first-half try before Aled Jenkins marked his debut with a try and Curtis Wilson scored his third of the season. Fly-half Aaron Penberthy meanwhile marked his first start for the team by landing all three conversions and two penalties early in the second half that kept the Yorkshiremen at arm’s length.

The opening 10 minutes were cagey as both team’s pack tried to impose themselves on the match. Both won penalties from each other and both tried to maul their way across the try-line, but neither were successful.

From a scrum on the Doncaster Knight’s line the home side set up an attacking platform and after Joe Munro was stopped on the line, James Cordy-Redden was unable to cleanly collect Aaron Penberthy’s cross-kick.

Cordy-Redden then made an important tackle to stop his opposite number Tyson Lewis as Doncaster Knights started to build a counter-attack.

When the play went up the other end an Ealing Trailfinders scrum gave Penberthy time to set up the attack and he set Munro free to hit a strong line run in for the opening score.

Cordy-Redden came to the rescue again when Knights’ fly-half Simon Humberstone threatened on the counter, Penberthy’s kicking kept the visitors pinned in their half.

Eventually they broke free and after Lewis broke the line he set Dave Clark to run in the five points that Doug Flockhart converted to tie the scores.

Ealing Trailfinders went back on the attack and Lewis Thiede almost set Luke Carter free after the tight-head had tapped a penalty. They continued to apply the pressure as half-time approached, but despite their best efforts Doncaster Knights’ defence held firm.

After half-time both teams sought to move the ball wide and after good Ealing Trailfinders pressure Penberthy knocked over a penalty to restore the hosts lead. He then added another after his high, hanging ball has caused the Knights’ defence problems.

Debutant Jenkins was beginning to make his presence felt in the centres and he too had to make an important tackle just as Lewis threatened to break clear.

Dave Nolan came close to scoring Doncaster Knights’ second when he charged down Carter’s kick, but the second-row knocked on as he went to pick up the ball. Flockhart then pushed a penalty wide as the match moved past the hour mark.

Carwyn Jones nearly grabbed an opportunist try when he swooped on a Willie Ryan charge-down, but he was stopped on the line. The ball came back quickly though and Jenkins had time and space to jink through the Knights’ defence for Ealing Trailfinders’ second try.

Arthur Ellis then showed his prowess when he won a turnover. He quickly moved the ball on to Llewelyn Jones, he found Ryan and he had the simple job of putting Wilson away in the corner.

As the Knights’ fought back fullback Jarvis knocked on with the line at his mercy and the Ealing Trailfinders defence continued to hold out though until five minutes from time when replacement Declan Cusack slipped through for their second try.

Doncaster Knights continued to assault the Ealing Trailfinders line as the clock ran down and after they went through multiple phases in attack, Nolan knocked on the tackle and after the Ealing Trailfinders forwards recycled the ball, Alex Walker hammered the ball off the field to ensure only the hosts claimed any points from the match.

Ealing Trailfinders are next in action next Sunday, 9 October, against Richmond at the Athletic Ground at 3pm.

James Cordy-Redden scored a late try to give Ealing Trailfinders their first Greene King IPA Championship victory of the season against long-time rivals Jersey Reds.

Following a hard-fought opening period, the match opened up in the second half and the Channel Islanders appeared be heading for a win after the match had swung back and forth.

Cordy-Redden had other ideas and picked a strong line from left to right to score his first try of the season. With the clock running down Jersey Reds frantically tried to regain the lead and the ball went wide to Ross Adair, but he knocked on with the line at his mercy to bring an end to the match.

After the opening exchanges it was the home team who took the lead. Ben Ward sent up a towering kick that Harry Casson claimed in the Jersey Reds’ 22. He off-loaded to Willie Ryan, who was held up, but from the subsequent scrum the pack won a penalty that Ward kicked.

Jersey Reds then took a grip through their pack and after a number of penalties they had their opposite numbers frantically defending their line. On four occasions they tried to shove the home’s side’s pack back, but each time they held firm and eventually the visitors conceded a penalty.

With a strong swirling wind neither side was able to find much rhythm, with defences staying on top, but Ealing Trailfinders doubled their lead late in the half after another high kick, this time from Luke Carter had given them good field position and won a penalty.

Ward knocked it over again and then soon after brought the end to a half which had featured more perspiration than inspiration.

The match opened up after the break and Jersey Reds quickly grabbed the lead. First Ross Adair came off his wing to race in between the posts and then fullback Jack Cuthbert rounded off a backline move down the right.

As the match moved past the hour mark Ealing had their chances close to the line and soft hands from former Jersey Reds fly-half Aaron Penberthy released Joe Munro to crash over.

Cope’s penalty on 71 minutes put the visitors back in front before Cordy-Redden’s powerful run swung the match back in the hosts’ favour. Again Jersey came, but Adair’s error put paid to their hopes of even more late drama.

Ealing Trailfinders were unable to take any points from their opening fixture as one of the promotion candidates left with all five on offer.

Harry Casson scored his first try for Ealing Trailfinders and Luke Daniels weighed in with eight points from a conversion and two penalties. They were unable to add any more points after half-time though as Yorkshire Carnegie used the wind and high-pressure defence to pin Ealing Trailfinders in their half.

The hosts began strongly and after strong carries from Joe Munro and Rhys Crane, Mark Bright came close to scoring from Jonny Bentley’s deft chip over the defence. Instead they went back for an earlier penalty and Daniels opened the scoring.

Yorkshire Carnegie hit back with their first attack of the match. Flanker Ollie Stedman carried strongly, Joe Ford made a half-break and McColl raced home in the corner.

Ealing Trailfinders used the wind well and only an unfortunate bounce stopped Curtis Wilson taking full advantage of another Bentley chip. Even so the hosts retook the lead from a second Daniels penalty following good play from centre Joe Munro whose powerful charge took him deep into Carnegie territory.

As the half wore on Carnegie enjoyed a good period of pressure and forced a number of penalties in quick succession, the last of which Alex Davies converted to put the visitors back in front. Another Stedman break then took Carnegie up to the Ealing Trailfinders line and after a number of pick and goes, Dean Schofield found a gap to go over.

Second-row Harry Casson showed a deft pair of hands to dummy his way through the Carnegie defence and a clean pair of heels to go under between the posts, but before half-time Carnegie stretched their lead when Lucock finished off a move that started with a powerful Ryan Burrows break.

The weather came into play more as the swirling wind was joined by rain. It caused errors on both sides, though Andrew Forsyth came within inches of a try before he was hauled down. Two phases on Ealing Trailfinders encroached and Ford scored the first points of the second half from a penalty.

Carnegie added a penalty try from a rolling maul that earned them a bonus point and then controlled the match till the final whistle.

Ealing Trailfinders now travel to face Cornish Pirates on Sunday 11 September, before their next home match against Jersey Reds on 17 September.

Ealing Trailfinders enjoyed a six-try win over Hartpury College to round off their pre-season preparations and ensure they go into the Greene King IPA Championship season with three wins behind them in pre-season.

Ben Ward’s team scored four tries before half-time and added a further two in the second half to add a victory over the students to away wins over Coventry and a Dragons Development XV.

After the early exchanges it didn’t take Ealing Trailfinders long to take control of the match and after two penalties took them close to the Hartpury College line, they soon scored their first try of the day.

Prop Lewis Thiede cleared up a messy line-out and after Joe Munro broke the defensive line, quick recycled ball allowed fly-half Jonny Bentley to pop the ball to Luke Daniels, who wiggled through the Hartpury College defence to open the scoring.

It gave the home team the confidence to take the match by the scruff of the neck and after great work at the breakdown by Mike Macfarlane secured turn-over ball, play went wide to Aled Jenkins. He in turn set Daniels free and after Hartpury College stopped the fullback he off-loaded to Phil Chesters for a simple finish.

Thiede and Ignacio Sanchez continued to provide a strong platform from the scrum, though both teams experienced problems with the wind at the line-out.

Even so Ealing Trailfinders scored their third try before the half-hour when Bentley found space to scoot over. Then after a swift counter-attack down the back-line took play from one end of the field to the other, Daniels finished the move for his second.

The visitors continued to play their own game and after they kicked a penalty to the corner, number 8 Jake Polledri touched down from the back of a rolling maul.

Will Harries came off the bench at half-time and within a few minutes scored the first try of the second half when he dotted down in the corner. Two minutes later James Cordy-Redden, another half-time substitute, finished in similar fashion in the other corner.

Hartpury College continued to press when they had the chance and Arthur Ellis and Alex Walker had to stand firm in defence when their impressive scrum-half Harry Cochrane threatened to set wing Jonas Mikalcius free.

Harries also stopped Mikalcius as the big wing made ground, but eventually Hartpury College found a way through when Italy international Seb Negri found a gap to race over for a try that Adam Hastings converted to finish the score for the afternoon.

Next Saturday Ealing Trailfinders open their Championship campaign against Yorkshire Carnegie at Vallis Way.
