Ealing Trailfinders suffered defeat in the top of the table clash against Newcastle as they went down 26-14 against the Falcons.

Ben Ward’s side enjoyed the majority of the possession and territory throughout but were punished for not taking their chances and were left empty handed after a relentless 80 minutes.

The Trailfinders started well and were in the ascendancy in the early stages of the match. A clearing kick from Steven Shingler fortuitously bounced up in to the arms of James Cordy Redden who was in acres of space but the Falcons defence scrambled back to wrestle him down.

Newcastle then opened the scoring with 16 minutes on the clock to take the lead. The Trailfinders were going through the phases in attack but Josh Matavesi intercepted a pass and then ran the length of the field to score under the posts. Toby Flood’s conversion extended the advantage to 7-0.

It then got better for the Falcons just three minutes later as Adam Radwan burst through for an individual score to shell-shock the Trailfinders defence. From a lineout a flat pass saw the winger beat the first man and he then used his searing pace to sprint through two defenders and dive over the line. Flood again added the extras to give the visitors a 14 point lead after the opening quarter.

A penalty for the hosts on the half hour mark then allowed the West Londoners to enter the Falcons 22, and that trip ended with them getting on the scoreboard. A maul was powering towards the line and it was brought down illegally so the Trailfinders opted for a kick at goal which Steven Shingler smashed through the posts, cutting the gap to 11 points.

Will Welch was then sent to the sin bin for the Falcons, and they were put under immense pressure until half time. Their maul defence allowed them to escape one attack from the hosts, but on both of the next visits in to their half a penalty allowed Shingler to dissect the posts and cut the deficit to just five points at the break.

The Green and Whites started the second half strongly and built the pressure in the early stages. Reon Joseph was within inches of scoring a wonder try as he stepped his way past a number of defenders on the wing, but in the act of putting the ball down he was hammered in to touch.

Shingler then spotted some space in behind and kicked towards Joseph who again was looking a threat, but the bounce fell kindly for the Falcons who managed to clear.

Dean Richards’ side then got some territory and threatened to extend their lead. With an overlap on the wing it looked as if Adam Radwan would get his second of the match, but Joseph scrambled back to keep him out.

The Falcons then landed what looked to be a decisive blow with 15 minutes remaining. They had two men free on the wing but as Tommy Bell looked for an interception he slapped the ball down, and the referee had no option but to give a penalty try and a yellow card to give the league leaders a 12 point lead.

That try however sparked the hosts in to life and they responded immediately. Shingler’s grubber kick found space, and Rayn Smid timed his run perfectly to dot the ball down before it went dead. The conversion went wide but the Trailfinders were eyeing up a late comeback to overturn a 14-21 deficit.

Any hope however of a memorable turnaround was ended when the Falcons went over for their bonus point try with just two minutes left. A kick ahead bounced in the Trailfinders 22 and it ended up with Gary Graham who was able to scramble over the line.

The hosts stayed in the fight for the final minute but the Falcons smashed the ball in touch to extend their lead at the top of the table to 11 points.

Ealing Trailfinders secured a home Quarter Final in the Championship Cup after a dominant 56-19 victory over Coventry.

Ben Ward’s side scored eight tries in total as their physical dominance gave them the platform to run away with another impressive win at Trailfinders Sports Club.

The tries came from Jordy Reid, Andrew Durutalo, Craig Hampson, Tommy Bell, Rayn Smid, James Cordy Redden, Jordan Burns and Kieran Murphy as they booked a place in the last eight of the Cup.

Jordy Reid gave the hosts the perfect start with a try after just three minutes to put them in front. A rolling maul powered towards the line and the Australian broke away, giving himself a clear run to the line. Steven Shingler’s conversion put them 7-0 in front.

The visitors then sparked in to life straight away and responded just 60 seconds later to get level. A knock on bounced up in to the hands of Max Trimble, and he pounced on it to race away in to the corner.

Andrew Durutalo, who was outstanding throughout then gave the Trailfinders the lead with 12 minutes on the clock. A penalty was kicked to the corner and then after going through the phases, the back-rower was able to power over from just two metres out. Shingler then kicked a penalty before the 20 minute mark to extend the lead to eight points.

Coventry got back in to the game as Andy Bulumakau intercepted a pass and ran the length of the field to score, but the hosts then took their performance up a level to secure the bonus point before the break.

Craig Hampson spotted a gap in the defence from the base of a ruck and dummied his way to the line, before Tommy Bell pounced on Steven Shingler’s grubber kick to give the West Londoners a commanding lead.

Ben Nutley was sent to the sin-bin for killing the ball for the visitors, and Shingler then added another three points from the resulting penalty to put the host 32-12 up at the break.

The second half started in electric fashion and Rayn Smid scored a captain’s try with just 90 seconds played. Lewis Jones carried all the way to the line, and then the ball was spun wide to Smid who strolled in to the corner unattended.

Coventry then scored an opportunistic try as Jack Ram took advantage of an overthrown lineout to dot down, but the Trailfinders then went on the rampage with three tries in the final 10 minutes.

Shingler and Willis combined in the midfield and fizzed a pass to James Cordy Redden who had a clear run to the line on his return to the starting line-up to the delight of the home supporters.

Jordan Burns then ran clear from the half way line in trademark style as he timed his supporting run perfectly to hit the ball at searing pace, and Shingler’s conversion brought up the half century of points.

Kieran Murphy rounded off the scoring as he capitalised on an overlap created by Elliot Millar Mills’ break, giving the Green and Whites a commanding win to book their place in the last eight once again.

Ealing Trailfinders completed a dramatic last gasp comeback to leave Ampthill with a crucial 24-22 victory.

The West Londoners trailed 22-14 with just eight minutes remaining, but a try from Jordan Burns and a 79th minute penalty from Craig Willis ensured that they made it five wins from five in the Championship Cup and set up a group decider against Coventry next weekend.

The Trailfinders raced in front with just two minutes on the clock as Kieran Murphy opened the scoring. A penalty was kicked to the corner and after going through the phases the ball ended up with the number eight who powered his way over the line. Craig Willis added the conversion to put his side 7-0 in front.

Ben Ward’s side then made a number of opportunities to extend their advantage but they couldn’t convert them and were punished shortly afterwards. A rolling maul was heading to the line and as Elliot Millar Mills broke away it looked like a try was coming but he was brought down just short and penalised.

Ampthill got their first try of the afternoon just before the 20 minute mark to get right back in to the match. From a lineout the ball was spun wide and found Josh Gillespie on the wing who has the pace to score in the corner. The conversion went wide but the Trailfinders were now just two points in front.

The hosts then went ahead as Sam Costelow’s penalty dissected the posts, but that sparked the Trailfinders in to life who responded immediately.

A lineout 20 metres from the line set the platform, and then the maul rampaged all the way to the line as Alun Walker dotted down under the post. Willis added the conversion, giving his side a 14-8 lead at half time.

After the break the Trailfinders were looking to kill the game with an early score and had chances courtesy of Elijah Niko and Alun Walker but their achilles heel for the afternoon was their discipline and that cost them again.

Ampthill then went ahead to give the home supporters a huge lift with half an hour remaining. Costelow broke the line and drew in the final defender before passing inside to Syd Blackmore who had a clear run. The conversion gave them a one point advantage, and it would get better for the hosts in the third quarter.

Peter Lydon was sent to the sin-bin and that opened up another opportunity for Ampthill. A penalty was kicked deep in to the 22, and from the resulting lineout Aleki Lutui powered over the line. The conversion gave them a 22-14 lead with just over 10 minutes left.

Jordan Burns would then take matters in to his own hands and gave the Trailfinders a lifeline in the closing stages. In trademark style he dummied from the base of a ruck and ran straight under the posts, before Willis added the extras to cut the deficit to just one point.

Burns then made another break and passed inside to Matt Cornish who looked like he would make it over but was hauled down just short as Ampthill continued to hold out the visitors.

With just over one minute left the decisive moment then gave the Trailfinders a huge sigh of relief. A penalty inside the 22 saw Craig Willis smash the ball through the posts, and then straight from the restart he hammered the ball in to touch to confirm a dramatic two point victory.

That win now means that the Trailfinders host Coventry next Saturday knowing that a win will secure them a home Quarter Final, tickets can be purchased here.

Ealing Trailfinders rampaged their way to their biggest win of the season after a huge 80-17 victory over Bedford Blues.

The West Londoners scored 12 tries in total in a relentless attacking display to put the Blues to the sword in mightily impressive fashion.

Once again the Green and Whites started quickly and scored their first try inside the opening 60 seconds. Craig Willis went straight through a gap in the defence and had Elijah Niko alongside him who crossed for his first try for the club.

Bedford however responded straight away and took the lead with 3 minutes on the clock. Dan Temm intercepted and raced through from 50 metres out to score. Lewis Robling’s conversion gave the visitors a 7-5 advantage.

That seemed to galvanise the Trailfinders who then scored three tries in six minutes to take control of the match.

Elliot Millar Mills powered over from close range to put his side back in front, before Reon Joseph had a walk in to the line after Tommy Bell’s pass out the back.

Craig Willis then strolled through an enormous hole to secure the bonus point, as the Trailfinders held a 24-7 lead with only 16 minutes played.

Rayn Smid was next to cross the line in a strong captain’s performance, again Bell was playing at second receiver and hit the skipper with a flat pass to cruise his way over.

Bell was rewarded with a try of his own on the half hour mark, a five metre scrum gave the hosts a fine attacking platform and as it spun wide the full-back then squeezed over in the corner.

Fields then got one back for the Blues from a rolling maul, but the Trailfinders still had time for two more tries before the break to bring up the half century.

Elijah Niko pounced on Willis’ cross field kick to bring up the 40 point mark, and then Jordy Reid was the beneficiary of Andrew Durutalo’s big carry to make it 52-12 to the hosts at half time.

The Trailfinders showed no signs of letting off in the second half, with Harry Sloan scoring after just 90 seconds. Another defence splitting pass from Willis allowed the centre to run clear from outside the 22.

Bedford then looked to rally as they eyed a try bonus point, and Dan Temm took a penalty quickly to score their third.

The Green and Whites however refused to let off and scored three more tries in the final quarter to extend the lead even further.

A collapsed maul fell just short of the try-line, and Kieran Murphy was there from the next phase to batter his way over. Craig Hampson then quick-tapped from just five metres out to bring up 70 points, and David Johnston then rounded off the scoring with a long range try to broaden the smiles on the home supporters.

Craig Willis added his 10th conversion to make it 80-17, and confirm an enormous victory for the Trailfinders who go from strength to strength in the Championship Cup.

Soane’s Kitchen Man of the Match: Craig Willis

Ealing Trailfinders moved up to second in the Greene King IPA Championship after grinding out a crucial 24-9 win against Doncaster Knights in a dogged display at Castle Park.

Ben Ward’s side held a one point lead at the break but controlled the game in the second half to ensure that they made it two away wins in a row, ending the first block of league matches on a high.

The first half was an arm-wrestle throughout with neither side able to gain any momentum due to a lack of discipline, and by the end of the match referee Tim Wigglesworth had awarded 30 penalties as both teams struggled in the conditions.

The Trailfinders started well but failed to convert their dominance in to points after chances for both Harry Sloan and Sam Dickinson passed by, and then the Knights edged ahead from the kicking tee.

Sam Olver put the hosts 3-0 in front on the 20 minute mark, but straight from the re-start the Trailfinders got a penalty of their own and Craig Willis smashed it through the posts to level the score.

Lewis Jones was sent to the sin-bin for a high tackle with 30 minutes on the clock and from the resulting penalty Olver edged the Knights 6-3 ahead, but there was time before the break for the visitors to make their mark.

A penalty was kicked to the corner just 10 metres from the try-line, and a smart move saw Andrew Durutalo smash his way over the line to put the Trailfinders in front for the first time in the game. Willis converted, extending the lead to four points as half time approached.

Olver was then on the money from the tee again with the final play of the half, meaning that the Trailfinders were one point in front as the teams headed down the tunnel.

There was a different side to the Green and Whites in the second half, they came out with far greater intensity and purpose as they went in search of the victory.

With 50 minutes on the clock a whole host of replacements were made and they had an outstanding impact to boost the Trailfinders to the win.

They were left frustrated as once again their discipline was costing them at crucial moments, but as the clock ticked past the hour mark they landed the killer punch.

A five metre scrum gave them the platform, and Will Davis then picked his way to the line to dot down for the decisive score. Willis’ conversion took the lead up to eight points, crucially beyond a converted try.

Craig Willis then shone with a number of kicks in behind to ensure that the Knights were unable to threaten, and with just two minutes remaining Rayn Smid scored to put some extra gloss on the scoreboard.

A penalty was taken quickly by Nathan Fowles, and he had the captain on his shoulder who powered over in trademark style. Willis added the extras to give the travelling supporters another reason to smile.

In the final play of the match the Trailfinders chased the bonus point but ran out of time, and the ball was smashed in to touch to confirm an impressive win.

Ealing Trailfinders stormed their way to a comprehensive 66-13 victory over Yorkshire Carnegie at Emerald Headingley Stadium in their most complete performance of the season so far.

Ben Ward’s side scored 10 tries in total including a late blitz of four in the final 10 minutes to get back to winning ways in emphatic style.

The Trailfinders went in front after just six minutes with a try from Kieran Murphy to set the tone for the afternoon. A penalty was kicked to the corner and then after going through the phases patiently, the ball found it’s way to the back-rower who powered over the line from close range. Craig Willis kicked the first of his seven conversions to give his side a 7-0 lead.

That lead then doubled with only 11 minutes on the clock as it looked like the visitors would run away with it. Eljiah Niko, who was making his first start for the club powered past four defenders to break the line, and then he had Nathan Fowles alongside who had a clear run to the line from just outside the 22.

Carnegie then rallied and responded straight away to get themselves back in to the match. Ryan Shaw kicked a penalty to open their account, and just a minute later he intercepted Lewis Jones’ pass to run under the posts and score. He converted his try, cutting the lead to just four points.

The West Londoners then went in search of the try bonus-point and scored twice before the break to wrestle back control of the game. A five metre scrum gave them an ideal attacking position, and the ball was spun wide to David Johnston who dived over in the corner.

Harry Sloan was then sent to the sin-bin for a dangerous tackle, but his team refused to let it affect them and Andrew Durutalo broke away from a rolling maul in the final play of the half to cross for try number four. The conversion went wide, but the Trailfinders went down the tunnel with a 24-13 lead.

The second half was as dominant as Ward’s men have looked all season and they scored 42 unanswered points to cruise to victory.

Reon Joseph scored a comical try to keep the scoreboard building just before the 50 minute mark. Craig Willis grubbered ahead, and the ball cannoned back off the post in to Joseph’s hands to dot the ball down.

The bench was then emptied and they had a monumental impact as the Trailfinders kicked on in impressive style. Alun Walker picked up from the base of a ruck and dummied to fool the defence, allowing him to run straight through to the line for try number six.

The scrum then started to get significant dominance in the final quarter, and they were rewarded with a penalty try after 70 minutes after it powered over from just five metres out.

Oli Robinson then marked his league debut with a try to bring up the half century of points. Ben West put huge pressure on the clearance and charged it down, with the ball bouncing up to the back-rower who pounced on it and scored.

There were just five minutes remaining but the Trailfinders still found time for two tries to round off the victory. Reon Joseph got his second after racing down the wing from 30 metres in trademark style, and Harry Sloan was then the beneficiary of Jordy Reid’s break as the Australian drew in the final defender to allow the centre a clear run to the line.

Willis’ conversion then marked the end of the match, and confirmed a hugely impressive victory for the Green and Whites who will head to Castle Park next week with a spring in their step.

Half Time Score: Yorkshire Carnegie 13-24 Ealing Trailfinders

Ealing Trailfinders were stung by a late comeback as Coventry scored two tries in the final quarter to leave West London with a 28-28 draw.

Ben Ward’s side had built a 28-14 lead with 20 minutes remaining after tries from Kieran Murphy, Matt Cornish, Rayn Smid and Harry Casson but had to settle for a share of the points on a wet and windy day at Trailfinders Sports Club.

The Trailfinders once again made a fast start and took the lead with just five minutes on the clock, a trait that has served them well so far this season. A penalty was kicked to the corner, and with the ball coming straight down from Rayn Smid it fell to Kieran Murphy who powered his way to the line from close range. Craig Willis added the extras to give the hosts a 7-0 lead.

Coventry then looked for a response and after a period of sustained pressure they got their reward. A succession of penalties saw them edge towards the line and then a rolling maul allowed Darren Dawidiuk to break away and open their account. Will Maisey’s conversion sailed over the posts to level the score.

Matt Cornish then put the hosts back in front just a minute later as the Green and Whites scored straight from the re-start. A penalty almost immediately was kicked within five metres of the line, and then in trademark style Matt Cornish was on hand at the back of the maul to score for the second consecutive week. Willis was again on the money from the tee to increase the advantage to seven points.

Craig Hampson was sent to the sin-bin on the half hour mark after an attempted interception was slapped down, and that allowed Coventry to cross the try-line again as they started to dominate the rest of the first half.

They inched towards the line and then found Rory Jennings who picked a great line to burst past the final defender. Maisey’s conversion made it 14-14 as the clock edged towards half time.

Rayn Smid looked to have put the Trailfinders back in front but was held up over the line to the disappointment of the home fans, and the sides then headed down the tunnel after a tight opening 40 minutes.

Ward’s men came out firing in the second half and were rampant in the opening stages to take control of the match.

Elijah Niko smashed past a couple of defenders to take play over the half way line and Harry Casson then broke as he entered the 22. Willis lifted the ball over the top and Rayn Smid was on hand to power over, giving his side the lead again. The flags went up for WIllis’ conversion as they once again held a seven point advantage.

Reon Joseph was then inches from getting on to the end of Craig Hampson’s box kick, but it didn’t take long for the bonus point try to arrive as Harry Casson bundled over.

A penalty was kicked to the corner and despite going close from the maul, Casson forced his way through the defence after minutes of pressure to give the hosts some breathing space.

Coventry refused to lie down and got back in to the match with a try from Max Trimble. They had possession on the half way line and a speculative pass found the winger in acres of space who had the pace to run clear. Maisey’s excellent touchline conversion cut the deficit to just seven points.

The pressure was building as the visitors eyed up a draw, and they would seal a share of the spoils with just three minutes left. Rory Jennings saw David Halaifonua on the wing and delivered an inch-perfect cross-field kick which allowed the Tongan international to score in the corner. Maisey again nailed the conversion under immense pressure to tie the scores.

Late drama then saw Rayn Smid crash his way past a number of defenders and race up to the half way line with Ben West on the inside, however the visitors managed to scramble back and ensure that the referee would signal the end of the match.

The Trailfinders now face two weeks on the road against Yorkshire Carnegie and Doncaster Knights as they look to regain their form.

Ealing Trailfinders ground out a crucial victory over Bedford Blues in treacherous conditions to leave Goldington Road with an 18-5 win.

Ben Ward’s side took advantage of a superior set-piece in the first half to build a lead, and it would not be breached in the closing stages as they deservedly registered back-to-back wins in the Greene King IPA Championship.

The wind and rain arrived shortly before kick off and didn’t let off for the entire evening making running rugby virtually impossible, so the Trailfinders relied on their rolling maul to give them the advantage.

Matt Cornish put the visitors in to the lead with just four minutes on the clock as they came flying out of the blocks. A penalty was kicked to the corner by Craig Willis, and from the lineout the maul powered to the line, allowing Cornish to dot down. Willis added the extras to put his side 7-0 ahead.

Bedford responded with 18 minutes on the clock to get themselves on to the scoreboard. They went through the phases in the 22 and then spun the ball wide to Ryan Hutler who beat the last defender to score in the corner. The conversion sailed wide in the wind, ensuring the Trailfinders held a two point advantage.

Willis then extended the lead to five with a penalty just before the half hour mark, and then in the closing stages of the half a crucial moment saw Cornish score his second to put his side in the ascendancy.

A penalty just five metres from the line was again kicked to the corner, and in identical fashion Cornish broke away from the maul to the delight of the visiting supporters. The conversion went just wide, but the Trailfinders went down the tunnel at the break with a 10 point lead.

In those conditions a 10 point advantage was always going to be significant, and the scrum began to shine in the second half with a succession of penalties leading to two yellow cards for the hosts for Josh Buggea and Karl Garside.

A number of penalties were kicked to the corner but the wind meant that the lineouts were going astray and the chances passed by.

Craig Hampson and Reon Joseph combined off the base of a ruck as they looked for an inside pass which would have set the winger free, but again in the rain the ball popped out of his hands.

Craig Willis then kicked his second penalty with just fifteen minutes left to increase the lead to 13 points, and despite Bedford looking for a way back in to the match the Green and Whites kept their try-line intact in the final stages to ensure that they left Bedford with an impressive victory.

The Trailfinders welcome Coventry to Trailfinders Sports Club next Saturday as they eye a third consecutive win to keep up the pressure in the early part of the season.

Ealing Trailfinders got back to winning ways in style after an eventful 52-38 victory over Jersey Reds at Trailfinders Sports Club.

Ben Ward’s side scored seven tries in total to register their first win of the league season, a win that was built on a relentless first half performance which saw them lead 33-0 at the break.

Jersey responded in the second half with six tries of their own to make for an eventful 80 minutes in the West London Autumn sun.

Dave McKern opened the scoring for the hosts after just six minutes to put them in front. A penalty was kicked to the corner and from the rolling maul, McKern broke away to cross the line against his old club. Steven Shingler added the conversion to increase the advantage to seven points.

Shingler then kicked two penalties in quick succession to put his side 13-0 up as the opening quarter drew to a close, and from then until half time the Trailfinders took their performance up a gear to take control of the match.

Alun Walker rumbled over for his 50th Ealing Trailfinders try with 25 minutes on the clock in trademark style as he broke away from a maul to power to the line. That was then quickly followed by James Cordy Redden crossing for an outstanding score on the half hour mark. An attacking lineout put the Trailfinders on the front foot, and an inside ball from Jordy Reid found the winger who was able to race clear from 20 metres.

It got even better for Cordy Redden just two minutes after as he dived over in the right hand corner again to secure the bonus point. After going through the phases in the 22 there was an overlap on the right, and quick hands found him to bring up 30 points for the hosts as half time approached.

Shingler then kicked his third penalty with the final play of the half to increase the lead to 33-0, a commanding position as the teams headed down the tunnel.

Jersey came out firing in the second half and scored after just two minutes as they looked to get back in to the match. Leroy Van Dam broke the defensive line and passed to Kyle Hatherell who had a free run in to the corner.

The Trailfinders responded straight away to regain control as Will Davis marked his return to Vallis Way with a try. A five metre scrum gave the hosts the platform, and the ball was popped up to the prop from the following phase who picked a great line to score under the posts. Shingler’s conversion increased the lead to 40-5 with half an hour remaining.

The visitors were thriving on loose ball as the game began to open up, and with searing pace in the back-line they began to take advantage. Van Dam capitalised on an opportunity to score their second, but once more the Trailfinders responded. A penalty allowed them to kick in to the corner, and once again Alun Walker broke off the back of a maul as he scored his second of the match.

Jersey then scored twice in quick succession as they registered a deserved four-try bonus point. Van Dam dotted down before Auguy Slowik also dived over for identical tries as once again loose ball ended up in their hands, and all of a sudden the lead was cut down to 19 points.

Matt Cornish brought up the half century of points for the hosts with just five minutes remaining as another rolling maul allowed him to score, and Shingler’s conversion saw the scoreboard read 52-26.

Jersey still had two tries left in them in the closing stages, with Will Homer pouncing on a grubber kick to complete his hat-trick before Jack MacFarlane went over from close range to round off the scoring.

The ball was then smashed in to touch to confirm a 52-38 victory after a breathless 80 minutes, and with another big test against Bedford Blues next weekend, a timely confidence boost was secured by the Trailfinders.

Ealing Trailfinders suffered a disappointing defeat on the opening day of the Greene King IPA Championship season as they fell 30-10 to Cornish Pirates at Mennaye Field.

The West Londoners were uncharacteristically lethargic throughout and failed to live up to their previous performances in the Cup, being beaten by a dominant Pirates side who never looked like surrendering their lead.

The hosts started strongly and took the lead inside the first 10 minutes with a try from Maliq Holden. A penalty from Javier Rojas Alvarez came back off the post but after the ball was cleared it fell in to the hands of Fa’atiga Lemalu who smashed his way through the defence and he had Holden on his shoulder who had a clear run to the line.

Their fast start continued with another try just four minutes later to the delight of the home supporters. On the counter attack they grubbered the ball through, and it bounced up perfectly for Nicolas De Battista who dotted the ball down. Alvarez’s conversion put his side 12-0 in front after just 12 minutes.

The Trailfinders then created a number of chances as they looked to get back in to the match, but they lacked the finishing prowess which is normally so firmly associated with them and the opportunities were missed.

Alun Walker and Rayn Smid combined in the midfield and set Kieran Murphy free just outside the 22, however the final pass to Nathan Fowles went forward to allow the Pirates to escape.

Jack Tovey then created space for Smid again as Jordy Reid carried past a number of defenders, but a fumble gave the hosts the scrum.

Alvarez increased the Pirates’ lead to 15 points on the 20 minute mark with a penalty which saw Craig Willis sent to the sin-bin as the afternoon got even tougher for the Trailfinders.

David Johnston got the Green and Whites on the scoreboard with a penalty from 40 metres as they looked for some reward, but a huge setback saw the Pirates cross the try-line in the final play of the first half to increase their advantage.

They continued to look dangerous with ball in hand, and a break deep in the 22 allowed Brett Beukeboom to bundle his way over, followed by Alvarez adding the extras to give his side a 22-3 lead at the break.

The Trailfinders came flying out of the blocks in the second half and increased the intensity significantly as they started to make crucial metres, however despite coming close on a number of occasions there was to be more frustration with Alvarez kicking another penalty to take the hosts’ lead up to 22 points.

Then a series of scrums deep in the Pirates 22 which included a whole host of penalties seemed to be getting the visitors some joy and a penalty try seemed inevitable, but they managed to hack the ball away as it spat out of the side to keep their try-line intact.

Jordan Burns then created a piece of magic with a sensational individual try to give the visitors some hope. The scrum-half picked up the ball from the base of a ruck and sniped his way past four defenders from 50 metres out to race over the line. Steven Shingler’s conversion cut the lead to 15 points with 15 minutes remaining in the Penzance sunshine.

As the Trailfinders began to chase the game with an eye on a memorable comeback, it was the Pirates who were next on the scoreboard to confirm their opening day win. A penalty was kicked to touch, and the rolling maul rumbled towards the line which allowed Calum Patterson to break away and score.

That proved to be the last try of the match and despite plenty of endeavour the Trailfinders were unable to break what was an impressive home defence, as the ball was smashed in to the stands to give the Pirates a bonus-point win.

Ben Ward’s men now face Jersey Reds next Saturday in their first home match of the league campaign as they look for a big response to a frustrating afternoon in Cornwall.
