Ealing Trailfinders got their second consecutive victory after a 35-19 bonus point win over Nottingham at Trailfinders Sports Club.

Ben Ward’s side scored five tries in a dominant display to get a deserved win thanks to scores from David Johnston, Harry Sloan, Alun Walker, Matt Cornish and Kieran Murphy.

Both sides struggled to create any clear cut chances in the opening stages as they adapted to the unusually warm conditions, but the Trailfinders steadily grew in to the game and went in front after 15 minutes with the first try of the match.

Craig Willis’ inch-perfect cross kick was gathered brilliantly by Reon Joseph who towered above his opposite number to claim the ball, and he popped it up to David Johnston who dived over the line in the corner. Willis added the extras from the touchline to put his side 7-0 in front.

Jordan Burns was then denied a try on the half hour mark as it appeared he had put the hosts further ahead. Harry Sloan broke the line and passed to Burns who used his electric pace to race past the defence, but just as he was in the process of putting the ball down he was chopped down which resulted in a knock on. The referee checked for a high tackle but judged the tackle legal and Nottingham escaped.

The Trailfinders got a deserved second try just before the break to extend their lead. A five metre scrum gave them the perfect platform, and the ball was spun straight to Harry Sloan on the crash ball who powered his way over the line from close range. Willis again converted as the Green and Whites went down the tunnel with a 14 point advantage.

The hosts made the perfect start to the second half as an early try confirmed their dominance and gave them full control of the match. Reon Joseph broke down the wing but was brought down just short, however play came back for an earlier penalty which was kicked to the corner. From the lineout the maul went all the way to the line and Alun Walker was there to score try number three. Willis again added the extras as the lead stretched to 21 points.

Nottingham made an immediate response and scored their first points of the afternoon virtually straight from the restart. They got a penalty and kicked it deep in to the Trailfinders’ 22, and after going through the phases Shane Buckley was able to cross for a try. Shane O’Leary converted to get the visitors a much needed way back in to the game.

Harry Sloan then went within inches of his second try which would have secured the bonus point when he capitalised on Johnston’s break to carry up to the line, but his offload was knocked on and the chance was missed.

The bonus point was however secured on the hour mark as Matt Cornish went over for try number four. Another penalty inside the 22 was kicked to the corner and the maul, which functioned well all afternoon allowed the hooker to break away and score. Willis was once more on target with the conversion to put the Trailfinders 28-7 ahead.

Nottingham again hit back with a try from the restart as they cut the deficit. They had sustained pressure in the 22 and spun the ball wide to Jordan Coghlan who ran over the line unattended. The conversion went wide but Ward’s side still held a 16 point lead.

Kieran Murphy put the result beyond doubt with try number five for the hosts with just 10 minutes left on the clock. The Trailfinders were camped inside the Nottingham 22 and the back-rower picked a great line to catch the defence off guard and was able to jog to the line from 20 metres out. Willis’ conversion moved his team 35-12 in front as we approached the closing stages.

Nottingham went over for a consolation try with just two minutes remaining to score the last points of the match. O’Leary’s miss-pass allowed Billy Robinson to go straight through the defence as it opened up straight in front of him. The conversion went over and the visitors then chased the bonus point in the last play of the game.

The Trailfinders managed to close out the final stages to confirm a 35-19 win in the Spring sunshine at Trailfinders Sports Club.

Ealing Trailinders got back to winning ways with a hugely impressive 61-20 victory over Coventry at Butt’s Park Arena.

Ben Ward’s side scored nine tries in a clinical attacking display as they rampaged to a dominant win in the Midlands. A memorable hat-trick from Reon Joseph as well as tries from Seb Stegmann, Kieran Murphy, Jordan Burns, David Johnston, Craig Willis and Lewis Jones secured the emphatic win.

The visitors made an lightning quick start and raced in front after just seven minutes with a try from Reon Joseph. Craig Willis’ inch-perfect cross-kick was gathered brilliantly in the air by the winger who then used his searing pace to run clear from 40 metres. Willis added the conversion from the touchline to give his side an early seven point advantage.

Coventry looked for an immediate response but the clinical Trailfinders would extend their lead on the 15 minute mark with another exceptional try. David Johnston broke through the defensive line and had Joseph on hand, who this time decided to pass to Seb Stegmann who had a free run to the line in the corner. Willis again added the extras as Ben Ward’s side looked back to their best.

Will Maisey capitalised on some ill-discipline from the visitors to kick two penalties in quick succession as the lead was cut to eight points, but the Trailfinders hit back to take control of the match before the break.

Kieran Murphy scored their third try just before the 30th minute to extend the lead further. A penalty was kicked to the corner and the forwards mauled towards the line before Murphy was able to break away to go over the line from close range. Willis, who clearly had his kicking boots on put the conversion between the posts to give the Green and Whites a 21-6 advantage.

Jordan Burns then went over to secure the bonus point in front of a stunned home crowd. Murphy, who was outstanding throughout bulldozed over the defence and offloaded to Burns who was never going to be caught from just 10 metres out. The conversion was once again added as the lead went up to 22 points.

Seb Stegmann went close to try number five when he capitalised on a huge hole in the defence to charge towards the line but from the following phase a knock on allowed the hosts to escape.

Coventry got a lifeline with the final play of the first half to get back in to the game. Tom Kessell broke and was brought down just short, but he had Will Maisey on his shoulder who dived under the posts for their first try of the match. He converted his own try as the West Londoners went down the tunnel with a 28-13 lead at the break.

The Trailfinders started the second half in the same way that they began the match with a huge amount of intent and they took just three minutes to go over for the first score of the half. A maul powered to the line and when it was brought down a free play saw Willis kick in behind, which bounced perfectly for David Johnston to dive under the posts. The fly-half again converted to extend the lead back to 22 points.

The momentum continued and Reon Joseph scored another wonder try just before the hour to put the result beyond doubt. He broke down the wing and played a clever one-two with Jordan Burns before using footwork to step past the final defender. The conversion went narrowly wide but the visitors were now up to the 40 point mark.

Try number seven followed 10 minutes later as Craig Willis capped off a great display with a deserved try. A set move from the base of a scrum on half way saw Lewis Jones and Seb Stegmann combine down the wing and took out the last defender to give the fly-half a clear run to the line. He converted his own try to take the lead over 30 points.

It got better for the Trailfinders as Lewis Jones was next to go over the line in the closing stages. The centre stripped his opponent in defence and then showed superb pace to run through from 50 metres. The extras were again added by Willis as the visitors brought up the half century of points.

Reon Joseph then completed his hat-trick with just five minutes left to mark a memorable day for the teenager. Laurence May stepped his way past a number of defenders on the right wing and then passed inside to the winger who was able to bundle over the line. The extras from Willis took the Trailfinders over the 60 point mark to the delight of the travelling supporters.

Coventry closed the scoring with a consolation try from Sam Tuitupou in the final minute, but the referee’s whistle signalled a fantastic day as the Trailfinders got back to form in stunning style.

Ealing Trailfinders suffered a disappointing defeat as a late try gave Richmond a 24-22 victory at the Athletic Ground.

Ben Ward’s men overturned a 12 point deficit to lead 22-17 with just five minutes left but a last gasp score meant they hosts secured a crucial win.

Richmond made a strong start and took an early lead through Rob Kirby when he kicked a 30 metre penalty after just seven minutes to give them a 3-0 advantage.

That was just after the Trailfinders had made a couple of half chances with breaks from Will Harries and Lewis Jones, but in the blustery conditions it made handling very difficult and resulted in knock-ons.

Richmond made the early pressure pay as they scored the first try of the match to go further in front. They went through 29 phases in the Trailfinders’ 22 and eventually went over as Will Goodrick-Clarke drove past the final defender from just one metre out. Kirby’s conversion extended their lead to 10 points.

That seemed to wake the visitors up and they immediately responded with a try from Matt Cornish. Will Harries made another break and was brought down, but in the process a yellow card was given to Richmond’s Luc Jones for killing the ball. From the resulting penalty the ball was kicked to the corner and Cornish was able to dot down from the back of the maul. The conversion went wide but the deficit was now just five points.

Harries, who was busy early on then broke through the defensive line again as he continued to look dangerous on the right wing but as the ball came back a Richmond hand disrupted the attack and allowed them to clear.

Kirby then had another penalty attempt due to the visitors struggling at scrum-time, but the ball held up in the wind and the scoreboard remained 10-5 as we approached the half hour mark.

The Green and Whites then upped the tempo in the closing stages of the first half as they looked to take the lead. Two big carries from Jordan Els and Kieran Murphy took them right up to the try-line but a knock on allowed Richmond to escape once more.

The Trailfinders continued to have most of the possession but with the final play of the half a crucial moment saw Cameron Mitchell intercept and run under the posts from 50 metres out to put the hosts further in front. Kirby’s conversion put them 17-5 ahead at the break after a frustrating opening half for the visitors.

Ben Ward made a number of substitutions at half time and they paid off as a side full of intent re-emerged from the changing room. Richmond had a scrum just five metres from the line but a penalty for the Trailfinders signaled a change in the tide and sparked a revival.

They had the ball 30 metres from the line and David Johnston floated a perfect pass over the top of the defence to Kieran Murphy on the wing who had the power to run through for the first points of the second half. The conversion went wide but they were now firmly back in the match with half an hour remaining.

The Trailfinders then completed the comeback with an incredible spell which saw them score twice in a minute to take the lead. Rayn Smid pounced on a loose ball and met a completely open back field so he had the pace to run through unattended and dive under the posts. Peter Lydon’s conversion made it 17-17 to level the score, and they took the lead just 30 seconds later.

Alun Walker gathered the restart and passed straight to Andrew Durutalo who again met a 50 metre patch of grass with no cover and he coasted through to put his side in front in dramatic circumstances. The conversion blew wide in the wind but the Trailfinders were ahead for the first time in the match.

Despite going in front the visitors struggled to build on that and it would be Richmond who took the lead with just eight minutes left to the delight of the home crowd. They had a series of scrums deep in the Trailfinders’22, and spun the ball straight to Henry Cheeseman who ran over the final defender to score. Kirby added the extras to put Richmond two points ahead.

Ward’s side then went within inches of scoring as Lewis Jones chased Kieran Murphy’s kick but an unfortunate bounce meant that Richmond escaped. The Trailfinders kept coming however and went deep in to their 22 with the final play but were stripped of the ball and the hosts smashed the ball out to confirm a frustrating defeat.

Ealing Trailfinders completed a dramatic second half comeback to secure a crucial 22-14 victory over Harptury at Trailfinders Sports Club.

The West Londoners overturned a 14-0 deficit with half an hour remaining to secure a seventh consecutive victory thanks to tries from Sam Dickinson, Rayn Smid and a penalty try.

In a first half littered with errors the Trailfinders were met by a resilent Hartpury defence who were frustrating the hosts.

Ben Ward’s side started promisingly and Harry Sloan carried from close range as he looked to go over for the first try but he was hit back and after going through a number of phases the visitors got a penalty.

The Trailfinders continued to enjoy most of the territory but failed to turn that in to points. They again went close when Rayn Smid got over the gain line and looked to offload to Peter Lydon but the pass went forward.

Hartpury then took the lead against the run of play as Ben Vellacott opened the scoring. A five metre scrum gave them the ideal attacking position, and the scrum half dummied from the base to dive over the line. Tiff Eden converted to give the visitors a seven point advantage.

Then came a crucial moment before the break as a sequence of five consecutive penalties from the scrum right on the Hartpury line looked to get the Trailfinders back on level terms, however after a five minute spell ended up with the visitors getting a penalty and they were able to clear to the anger of the home supporters.

The Green and Whites continued to hammer away at the Hartpury line but they ran out of time and went down the tunnel at half time trailing by seven points.

The Trailfinders began the second half with similar intensity but it was Hartpury who extended their lead to go further ahead. They went through the phases right up to the line, and then Vellacott dummied again from just a metre out to score. Eden added the extras as the advantage went up to 14 points.

The bench then came on for the hosts and made an instant impact as Matt Cornish made a break down the wing to take the Trailfinders up to the line. A penalty was then awarded and from the maul Sam Dickinson bundled over to get them back in to the match.

Seb Stegmann then had a chance down the wing as a turnover ball saw the defence open up but in admirable fashion the Hartpury defence rushed back to drag him in to touch.

The Trailfinders scored their second on the hour mark as the comeback took another step forward. In identical style a five metre lineout was mauled to the line, and this time it was brought down which forced referee Sara Cox to award a penalty try and cut the deficit to two points.

Rayn Smid completed the comeback with just 10 minutes left to send the home supporters in to raptures. The hosts had a five metre scrum and the captain powered over from five metres out to put his side in front. Lydon added the extras, giving the Green and Whites a five point advantage.

Peter Lydon then sealed the victory with a monstrous 50 metre penalty as the clock ticked away, putting the Trailfinders 22-14 ahead.

Ward’s men closed out the final seconds and smashed the ball in to the stands to celebrate a vital victory as they maintained their tital challenge.

Ealing Trailfinders stormed through to the Championship Cup Final after an emphatic 58-26 victory over Cornish Pirates at Trailfinders Sports Club.

The West Londoners scored nine tries to book their place in the final against London Irish in May.

Despite their eventual dominance on the scoreboard it was the Pirates who started strongly and raced in to a 21-5 lead in the opening quarter.

Dan Frost broke through the defensive line to put the visitors in front with just one minute on the clock, and that lead was doubled straight after when Alex O’Meara pounced on a length of the field kick to dive over in the corner. Harvey Skinner added both conversions to put his side 14-0 up.

The Trailfinders responded straight away as Jordan Burns scored the first of his four tries to cut the deficit. Kieran Murphy got over the gain line and passed to the scrum-half who had the pace to run clear from 30 metres. The conversion went wide and then the Pirates went over for try number three to extend their advantage.

Robin Wedlake pounced on a looping pass to intercept and score, with another conversion from Skinner putting them 21-5 ahead. That seemed to galvanise the Trailfinders who then hit back with three tries before the break to go in front.

Burns got his second after jumping on Harry Sloan’s offload and again racing away from outside the 22, before James Cordy Redden dived over in the corner in impressive style. Laurence May added both conversions to cut the gap to just two points.

He then kicked a penalty to put the Trailfinders 22-21 in front, and with Pirates’ discipline seeing two of their players sent to the sin-bin the hosts captailsed with another score before half time.

Sloan again smashed through the defence and found Cordy Redden on the wing who went through for his second, and put the hosts 27-21 in front at the break.

Ben Ward’s side continued their momentum in the second half and put the result beyond doubt with two early tries. Harry Sloan took advantage of Will Harries’ break to score acrobatically in the corner, O’Meara then got one back for the Pirates but Dave Johnston marked his return to the starting line up with a try to take the hosts over the 40 point mark.

Rayn Smid then scored the try of the match to spark wild celebrations from the supporters as he stole a lineout and then ran 60 metres whilst brushing past a number of defenders to crash over the line. May again added the extras as they neared the half century.

That landmark was reached in impressive style again as the hosts showed their expansive style with some scintillating rugby. Alun Walker’s audacious offload allowed Jordan Burns to complete his hat-trick on the 70 minute mark, and there was still time for one more try to round off a fantastic performance.

Burns got the ball on the half way line and once more used his pace to beat the Pirates defence and confirm an empahtic 58-26 win in the sunshine at Trailfinders Sports Club.

Details of the Cup Final will be confirmed in the coming days for the season-ending clash against London Irish.

Ealing Trailfinders produced an outstanding performance to secure a 28-8 bonus point victory over Cornish Pirates at Mennaye Field.

Tries from James Cordy Redden, Rayn Smid and a double from Jordan Burns ensured they left Cornwall with a memorable win in a match that they dominated throughout.

Despite a whole host of issues with transport meaning a delayed arrival the Trailfinders came flying out of the blocks in the early stages and went close to opening the score after just two minutes.

After gathering the kick off they went through the phases and a break from Will Harries saw him race towards the 22 before offloading to Jordy Reid. The flanker went close to the line but was bundled down as the Pirates managed to scramble the ball back.

The West Londoners went in front on the 10 minute mark as they turned their early display in to a lead courtesy of James Cordy Redden. A penalty was kicked to the corner and the visitors edged their way towards the line before a Laurence May dummy opened up the defence. The former Pirate offloaded inside to the winger who was able to dive over from close range. Peter Lydons’ conversion extended the lead to 7-0.

The hosts began to grow in to the game as a number of penalties allowed them to enter the Trailfinders territory. They got back in to the match with half an hour on the clock as AJ Cant crossed for a try. Alex Day picked up from the base of a ruck and a neat grubber in behind bounced up to Cant who was able to score in the corner.

That was quickly followed by a penalty from Harvey Skinner to put the Pirates in front as we approached half time, but a crucial score from Rayn Smid put the Green and Whites ahead with the last play of the half.

Another break from Will Harries took the visitors in to the 22, and the ball was spun to Smid who beat the final defender to score. Lydon’s conversion put the Trailfinders 14-8 ahead at half time.

Pirates looked for a quick response after the break and a penalty took them up to the five metre line but an outstanding piece of defence from the forwards managed to pull the maul down to stop what appeared a certain try.

Jordan Burns then scored a crucial try 10 minutes in to the second half to give the Trailfinders some much needed breathing space. Rohan O’Regan latched on to a pass to create space down the wing, and he offloaded inside to the electric Burns who raced clear from 35 metres to dive under the posts. Lydon again added the extras to put his side 13 points ahead.

Both sides then turned to their kicking game as they looked to get territory as the wind began to pick up, but it would be the Trailfinders who would get the next score to secure the crucial bonus point.

In almost identical fashion Kieran Murphy made a break from the base of a ruck before passing to Burns who once more had the pace from 30 metres to stun the Mennaye Field crowd and send the travelling supporters in to raptures. Lydon’s conversion from in front od the posts but the result beyond doubt as the lead moved out to 20 points.

Matt Cornish then went close to adding further gloss to the scoreboard as he intercepted and passed to Cordy Redden but he was brought down as the Pirates defence looked to deny the visitors another score.

The Trailfinders held firm in the closing stages to smash the ball in to the stands and confirm a highly impressive victory which will give them the perfect boost ahead of next weekend’s Championship Cup Semi Final.

Ealing Trailfinders produced a superb late comeback to secure a dramatic 33-24 bonus-point victory over Doncaster Knights at Trailfinders Sports Club.

Ben Ward’s men trailed at the break and the visitors were still in front as we entered the final 10 minutes but late tries from Matt Cornish and Rayn Smid gave the Trailfinders a crucial win over the in-form Knights.

The hosts started in emphatic fashion and went in front after just seven minutes with a try from Kieran Murphy. A penalty was kicked to the corner and after the maul was brought down the ball was spread wide, allowing the back-rower to step his way to the line. Peter Lydon added the conversion to give his side a 7-0 advantage.

Another chance followed quickly as Lydon broke through the middle and had Will Harries alongside on the right wing, but the looping pass went in to touch and Doncaster got the lineout.

The Trailfinders wasted no time to score try number two, and crossed before the 20 minute mark to take control of the match. The Knights were going through the phases in the 22 but James Cordy Redden intercepted a pass and ran 80 metres to score in the corner. Lydon’s excellent conversion extended the lead to 14 points.

However that sparked Doncaster in to life and they responded with three tries before half time to take the lead.

A rolling maul powered towards the line which allowed Mike Mayhew to bundle over, and Kurt Morath’s conversion cut the gap to seven points.

Their second try came five minutes before half time as another maul from close range allowed Rory Pitman to score, and with the last play of the first half they went in front.

They had all the momentum and Tom James snuck over right under the posts to give them a clinical lead. Morath added a third conversion as they went down the tunnel 21-14 ahead.

The Trailfinders needed a big response in the second half and they pulled themselves level on the 50 minute mark as Kieran Murphy crossed for his second try. A penalty was kicked just short of the line and gave the hosts the platform to score, which allowed them to spread the ball wide to Murphy who dummied past the final defender. Lydon’s third conversion made it 21-21 with an intriguing half an hour ahead.

Both sides then looked to make their mark in the final quarter, and it was Doncaster who would go ahead with a penalty from Kurt Morath. Curtis Wilson was brought down just short but the referee went back for an earlier infringement, which allowed the fly-half to put his team ahead with 15 minutes remaining.

The West Londoners responded in impressive style to go in front straight from the re-start. They gathered the ball and then went wide straight away with Peter Lydon and Rayn Smid combining to go up to the line, and quick ball hit Matt Cornish on a great angle to smash his way over the line. Lydon’s conversion put the hosts four points ahead.

Rayn Smid then sealed the victory with five minutes left to ensure a huge sigh of relief around the ground. After a number of phases deep in the 22 the captain was there to power over from close range for try number five, extending the advantage to 33-24.

The hosts closed out the final two minutes and smashed the ball in to the stands, confirming a hard-fought victory to maintain their place in the top-two of the Greene King IPA Championship.

Ealing Trailfinders stormed through to the semi finals of the Championship Cup with a dominant 41-10 victory over Nottingham at Trailfinders Sports Club.

The West Londoners scored five tries and thoroughly deserved the win as Lewis Jones, Harry Sloan, Jordan Burns, Matt Cornish all crossed the line as well as a penalty try to set up a home semi final in three weeks time.

Nottingham took an early lead as former Trailfinder Shane O’Leary kicked them in front after 10 minutes, but from then on the hosts dominated the first half to work their way in to a commanding lead.

The scrum was giving them a superb platform to attack, and after a penalty was awarded Laurence May kicked to within five metres of the try-line. Three successive penalties were then given to the Trailfinders as Nottingham continued to bring the maul down, and eventually the referee was forced to go under the posts to give the hosts a penalty try. Shane Buckley was also sent to the sin bin in the process, giving the West Londoners a man advantage for 10 minutes.

The Green and Whites took full advantage of having an extra man, and May kicked a penalty from 30 metres out just before the half hour mark to extend the lead to seven points.

Lewis Jones then crossed the try-line for the second consecutive week as the Trailfinders continued to dominate before half time. A penalty was kicked to the corner and a set play saw the backs get the ball straight from the lineout, eventually being spun wide to Jones who was there to stretch over in the corner. May added an impressive conversion to give his side a 17-3 lead as half time approached.

The confidence was clearly flowing for the hosts who were playing expansive rugby from anywhere, and they came within inches of a wonder try in the closing stages of the half. Seb Stegmann gathered a high ball and passed to Jordan Burns who straightened up the line before releasing Matt Cornish down the wing, but in the process of scoring he was dragged in to touch.

Ben Ward’s men saw out the final minute of the half and kicked in to touch to run down the tunnel with an impressive 17-3 lead at the break.

The Trailfinders showed no signs of slowing down after half time and came out with the same intent as the lead continued to grow. Harry Sloan got the hosts’ fourth try of the match on the 50 minute mark as they began to put themselves in an unassailable position.

A maul was brought down just short of the 22, and the centre powered his way through three defenders to run clear and dive over the line. May again converted to put the lead up to 21 points.

Ward’s side kept their foot on the gas and crossed again 10 minutes later to put the result beyond doubt. Lewis Jones who picked up the Man of the Match award broke in the midfield and ran through from 30 metres before unselfishly offloading to Jordan Burns who was able to dot the ball down. The conversion from May took the hosts over the 30 point mark.

Nottingham responded well and got a try as the teams entered the final quarter courtesy of David Williams who latched on to an offload from close range to score, and O’Leary converted but the Trailfinders then added further gloss to the scoreboard in the following moments.

A penalty was kicked to the corner and from the resulting maul Matt Cornish broke away to score, before another conversion from May gave the Trailfinders a 38-10 advantage.

Craig Willis added another three points from the tee with the final play of the match to take the hosts over 40 points, and that signaled the final whistle as the Trailfinders booked their place in the semi finals of the Championship Cup.

Ealing Trailfinders produced a stunning second half performance to secure an impressive 29-7 bonus point victory over Yorkshire Carnegie at Emerald Headingley Stadium.

Ben Ward’s men faced a 7-0 deficit at half time but responded with four unanswered tries to run away with a crucial win to remain second in the Greene King IPA Championship.

An uneventful first half in blustery conditions saw both sides trying to adapt, and as a result a number of handling errors saw very few chances created. The hosts went in front on the half hour mark as a counter attack gave them plenty of space in the midfield to score the first points of the afternoon.

A loose kick landed in the hands of Jacob Umaga who stepped through three defenders and offloaded to Jade Te Rure, which allowed the fly-half to slide over the line under the posts. Umaga converted to give his side a 7-0 advantage as the clock ticked towards the break.

That seemed to spark the Trailfinders in to life and James Cordy Redden went within inches of scoring a spectacular try with five minutes remaining of the first half. A number of offloads gave the winger a route to the line from just outside the 22, but he was held up over the line and the hosts survived.

From the resulting scrum a number of penalties followed but that platform couldn’t provide a scoring moment and Carnegie went in at the break with a seven point lead.

The West Londoners were at their clincal best in the second half and brought themselves level after just three minutes as they grew in confidence.

Peter Lydon broke through two defenders and passed inside to Lewis Jones who still had plenty of work to do but used his footwork to race through from 35 metres to get the Green and Whites’ first points of the match. Lydon converted to bring his side level with just over half an hour remaining.

Lydon then edged the Trailfinders in front on the hour mark with a penalty from 40 metres, and they didn’t look back from there as three tries in the final quarter gave them a memorable win.

Jordan Burns scored a trademark try with 15 minutes left to give the visitors some much needed breathing space. From the top of a lineout the ball was spun to Jordy Reid who smashed his way past the defence before releasing Burns who ran diagonally across the pitch to sneak over in the corner. Lydon converted from the touchline to extend the advantage to 10 points.

James Cordy Redden then put the result beyond doubt with five minutes left to put the Trailfinders further in front. Sustained pressure deep in the 22 saw them creeping further towards the line, and an inside ball presented the winger with the opportunity to bundle over from just five metres out. The conversion went narrowly wide, but the visitors now had just three minutes to chase the all important try bonus point.

It arrived in dramatic fashion with the final play of the game to send the vocal visiting supporters in to raptures. Another break from Jones and then Burns brought them up to the line, and an offload saw Will Harries dive over from close range to get the bonus point. Lydon added the conversion to confirm a highly impressive 29-7 victory.

Ward’s side now head in to next Saturday’s Championship Cup Quarter Final at Trailfinders Sports Club with growing confidence after a crucial win at Headingley.

Ealing Trailfinders got back to winning ways after a five-try victory over London Scottish at Trailfinders Sports Club.

The hosts had to overturn a half time deficit but rallied strongly in the second half to ensure that they got their first win of the year courtesy of tries from James Cordy Redden, Rayn Smid, Matt Cornish and a double from Alun Walker.

The Trailfinders made an impressive start and played with real tempo in the opening stages as they looked to stamp their authority on the match. Harry Sloan broke through the middle and was brought down just short, but from the resulting penalty the ball was kicked to the corner and allowed Alun Walker to drive over the line from five metres out to open the scoring. Peter Lydon’s conversion went just wide but the hosts held a 5-0 lead after as many minutes.

However just as it looked as if the Green and Whites had made the ideal start, two quick scores from the visitors turned the scoreboard on its head with a quarter of an hour on the clock.

The Scots went through the phases on the half way line, and an inside ball opened up a huge gap which allowed Miles Mantella to race clear from 40 metres to dot the ball down. Rory Jennings added the extras to put them in front.

Just moments later they extended their lead after a Trailfinders lineout was over thrown and bounced up to the Scots. They instantly spun the ball wide and Tom Griffiths had the pace to run through the defence and slide over for their second try of the afternoon. Jennings again converted to put the visitors nine points in front.

Ben Ward’s side then began to dominate possession as they looked for a way back in to the match, and they were rewarded on the 20 minute mark as Alun Walker went over for his second try of the match. The hosts went through phase over phase deep in the 22, and the hooker carried from close range to bundle over the line. Peter Lydon converted to cut the deficit to just two points.

The hosts created a number of opportunities in the lead up to half time but were left frustrated as a number of knocks ons saw the chances missed. A rolling maul powered towards the line and just at the crucial moment the ball was popped in to Scottish hands, before Lydon broke through the middle but a last ditch tackle saw the Scots survive.

The Trailfinders couldn’t get over the try-line for the remainder of the opening 40, and went in at the break trailing by two points.

Scottish extended their lead straight away as Griffiths broke through again to run through from 40 metres, but the hosts responded when James Cordy Redden was the beneficiary of an overlap on the left wing to cut the deficit to just two points.

A lineout was stolen and straight away the ball was spun wide to the winger who dived in the corner as the Trailfinders got themselves right back in the match.

Ben Ward’s men eventually battled in front just before the hour mark as captain Rayn Smid went over for their fourth try after going through the phases in the 22, and Lydon’s conversion put them five points in front heading in to the final quarter.

Matt Cornish then put the result beyond doubt after powering over the line from close range with 15 minutes remaining for try number five, but the Scots refused to lie down and got a deserved try bonus point in the closing stages as Byron Hodge latched on to an offload to dive over the line.

That score meant that the lead was only five points with seconds left on the clock , but Lydon’s late penalty with the final play of the match ensured that the hosts registered a 34-26 win.
