WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE OPPOSITION:

Nottingham have had a tough start to 2023, but although they may have not always got the results they would have wanted, the performances have certainly been there.

The opening game of the year saw a valiant display down in Penzance as Cornish Pirates were able to grind out a 17-6 victory. They then faced the in-form Caldy, who won an exciting 17-29 affair before they travelled to Doncaster and faced a resurgent Knights side. With ten minutes left to play, the Archers were only five points down, but a late penalty followed by an intercept try saw the hosts win it 32-17.

After a difficult January, last weekend’s return of the Championship Cup couldn’t come soon enough for Nottingham as they faced Hartpury at the Bay. For a team known for their attack, their performance was built around their strong defence, as they ground down the visitors before David Williams was set loose for his hat-trick as they ran out 24-12 victors.

LAST TIME WE MET:

Our last trip against the Archers came in this competition in mid-November as we travelled to the Bay and only just emerged with the result.

The hosts came out of the blocks fast as Morgan Bunting and David Williams helped them race to a 12-0 lead. In a game that was not as slick as Trailfinders had become used to, they went back to one of their real strengths, the rolling maul. Simon Uzokwe was able to bundle over on the back of one in the first 40, before Carlo Tizzano claimed a brace, also on the back of the maul, in the second half.

Nottingham levelled the scores up at 19-19 through Jordan Olowofela, but a try from Jan-Henning Campher with 10 minutes to go was enough to close out a tight 19-26 victory.

Director of Rugby Ben Ward said: “Sometimes you just have to find a way to win and today was one of those occasions. Credit has to go to Nottingham for putting us under so much pressure, but I’m pleased to be coming away with all five points.”
