Loan Watch: Ealing Trailfinders Women

We had a number of our Ealing Trailfinders Women Academy players on loan at various clubs over the weekend.

Cassie Tuffnail, Maddie Blackwell, Jo Bucknell and Eva Bannette all played for Richmond Women on Sunday against Thurrock Ladies. Cassie started at tight-head, backing up from her player of the match appearance last weekend at Beckenham, while Maddie, Jo and Eva all made impacts off the bench in Richmond’s bruising 7-12 defeat at the Athletic Ground.

Meanwhile over at Henley Hawks Women (pictured above), Emily O’Brien started at inside centre on her debut, while Renae Baker scored a sensational try off the wing, kick, chasing and collecting to score. Flo Kirsten-Foster came on at outside centre and Annabell Luntz continued her positional change, making a positive impact off the bench at blindside flanker. The final score finished Henley Hawks 29 – Beckenham Ladies 29.

Over the A3 we had our first partnership game at Wimbledon Women with lock Lizzie Marriot getting her first chance at Women’s Championship 2 in their 36-7 win over Canterbury.

Charlotte Shepherd, Molly Brown, Abbie Hatherall, Tamara Morrison and Jada Allen all contributed to Chobham’s hard-fought last minute win against NC1 rivals Oxford Quins, with Izzy Fisher featuring in her third match of the season.

Community Day: Ealing Broadway Shopping Centre

We’re excited to be hosting our Ealing Trailfinders Community Day this Saturday 22nd October at Ealing Broadway Shopping Centre.

Our Ealing Trailfinders Foundation Team will be set up in the Ealing Broadway Shopping Centre square from 10am-6pm this Saturday. We will have our AKtivator truck positioned in the centre of the shopping square with plenty of competitions, challenges, merchandise and prizes up for grabs.

PLUS, you will have the opportunity to meet some of our Ealing Trailfinders first-team players and have your photos taken with the players and our 2021/22 Championship trophies.

LOAN WATCH: WEEK SIX

With just one player in loan action this weekend, hear how Ollie Fox got on against Hull RUFC.

Hull RUFC 22-27 Leeds Tykes

Scrum-half Ollie Fox returned to his hometown club, Leeds Tykes, at the weekend as he started for them in their victory at Hull.

Given the competition and strength at 9, Ollie has struggled for minutes this season, and so the trip back home was a chance for him to get some important game time ahead of our next block of fixtures.

The game was a typical Yorkshire derby, free flowing, entertaining and hard hitting. At the break Leeds were ten points up, but Hull did well to fight back and level it up at 22-all with 10 minutes remaining, before Leeds scored a last minute try to grab the encounter.

Ollie played well, with crisp, quick passing throughout the game and strong support lines whenever there was a line break. He won multiple turnovers in open play, as well as making crucial tackles which all helped deliver Leeds the victory.

London Scottish 32-46 Coventry

There was just one player in loan action this weekend, as David Douglas Bridge started on the blindside for London Scottish as they faced Coventry at the Athletic Ground.

Coming into the game Coventry had been in reasonable form, with two wins over Ampthill and Bedford Blues, however the midlanders hadn’t beaten the Exiles at the RAG in the league for 24 years so it was always going to be an interesting encounter!

After 15 minutes the Exiles were 19-0 up, but the visitors responded well and went into the break 22-24 ahead. Although Scottish fought well throughout, Coventry pulled away in the last 20 minutes and ran out 32-46 winners.

Bridge worked tirelessly throughout the game, carrying well but also doing a lot of the unseen work on the floor and in defence.

By Road:

From the A40 take the B452 turn-off towards Ealing (actually signposted as Perivale) along the Argyle Road. Pass through a set of traffic lights and across a roundabout. At the second roundabout, (about 0.5km) turn right into Vallis Way. Trailfinders Sports Club entrance is at the end of the road. Click here to view map.

Car parking is available at the ground and costs £5 per vehicle. You can purchase your parking ticket at the gate via card or cash.

By Rail:

You can take a national rail train from Paddington to Ealing Broadway and then hop on a bus (see below). Click here for the latest National Rail updates.

By Tube:

The London Underground will be operating and you can take the Central Line, District Line or Elizabeth Line to Ealing Broadway, and then take a bus, taxi or walk to the ground (approx. 20 minute walk). Alternatively, you can take the Elizabeth line from Paddington to West Ealing station and then walk to the ground (approx. 15 minutes).

By Bus:

Many buses stop in the vicinity of Trailfinders Sports Club, including the 297, E1, E2, E7, E9 and E10. The nearest bus stop to the ground is ‘Scotch Common’, which is a five minute walk to the club.

CARLO TIZZANO: SEPTEMBER PLAYER OF THE MONTH

After a hugely impressive start in W13, flanker Carlo Tizzano has been named the Ealing Trailfinders Player of the Month for September.

The flanker, who scored four tries in three league games in September, currently sits joint third in the Championship try-scoring charts and is the highest scoring forward in the league.

On picking up this award, Carlo said: “It’s pretty awesome to have been awarded this accolade in my first month here. I’m pretty stoked about it and I’ve got to say a huge thank you to everyone who voted.

“We have such a competitive and talented squad here and I’ve got to thank the boys around me for allowing me to play the way I do.”

There will be a full feature interview with Carlo in this weekend’s programme for our game against Richmond. The programme will be released online on our website and across our social media channels, via our partners Zeeon tomorrow afternoon. Loan Watch: Championship Round Three

Trailfinders had four representatives running out at the Athletic Ground this weekend as London Scottish welcomed Jersey Reds to South-West London.

London Scottish 21-55 Jersey Reds

Prop Elliot Chilvers, second-row David Douglas Bridge and winger Josh Gillespie all started the game while Trailfinders Rugby Academy player Lawrence Mason made his debut for the Exiles from the bench.

After a physical start, Chilvers was taken off early, but Scottish did well to contain their full time opponents and they only trailed 12-7 at the half-time break. Scottish did well to absorb a lot of pressure in the first half, but this changed in the second 40. Jersey ran in seven second half scores as they ran out 55-21 winners.

Josh made good in-roads throughout the game while David worked tirelessly around the park and at the breakdown. The standout performance however came from Lawrence, who was a real menace off the bench. He made several clean breaks and his quick thinking helped setup Scottish’s third and final try as he received a quick line-out before providing the final pass for winger Zach Clow to score.

Welcome Jonathan Thomas

Ealing Trailfinders are delighted to announce that Jonathan Thomas will assist the coaching team as a Forwards Consultant.

Thomas (JT) joins us with a wealth of experience and expertise to help improve the team. He has previously been Head Coach at Worcester Warriors, from 2020 up until the start of this year. Before that he spent four years at Bristol Bears as Defence and Forwards Coach learning under Pat Lam. He helped the Bears achieve promotion to the Premiership and win the Challenge Cup (their first ever European title).

JT took up his role at Bristol immediately after finishing his hugely successful playing career. He represented Swansea, Ospreys and Worcester Warriors throughout his 14 year spell as a player. He was capped 67 times by the Welsh National team, starting every game during their 2005 and 2008 Grand-Slam winning campaigns. He went to two World Cups (2003 and 2007) and appeared in every Six Nations squad between 2004 and 2011.

Lam described him as “excellent team man and an outstanding young coach” when he left Bristol and JT has already started helping the squad.

JT said: “I’m really pleased to be here at Ealing and everyone at the club has been so welcoming, that I feel like I’ve been here for ages.

“From speaking to Wardy (Ben Ward) it just felt like a really natural fit. I’ve played in this league before, I’ve coached in this league before and so I know how tough the Championship is and hopefully I can make a positive difference.”

Director of Rugby Ben Ward said: “I’m really pleased to have been able to recruit someone of JT’s quality and know-how to help aid our coaching team. He is an incredibly exciting coach with Premiership experience and also the knowledge of how to get a team promoted from the Championship after being part of the Bristol staff that did so.

“He’s already slotted in well to our setup and I know the boys are learning a lot from him.”

This appointment comes after the mutually agreed release of Forwards and Defence coach Glen Townson. Due to family reasons, Glen was looking for a role closer to his home in Bristol. Everyone at Ealing Trailfinders thanks Glen for his work at the club, both as a coach and a player, and wishes him all the best for the future.
