After a lengthy off-season, Ealing Trailfinders return to Trailfinders Sports Club for the opening pre-season fixture against Welsh side Cardiff Rugby.

Trailfinders enter this season once again on the back of a Championship-winning season and are setting their sights on another victorious season.

This Saturday provides a fantastic opportunity to test themselves against one of the best Welsh sides in the United Rugby Championship.

Over the years, Cardiff has provided more players to the Welsh international side and British and Irish Lions than any other Welsh club.

Cardiff finished in 12th in last year’s United Rugby Championship, and we are excited to be hosting them for what promises to be an entertaining pre-season fixture.

Trailfinders finished first once again in last season’s Championship, winning 16 games across the season, and were crowned champions with still a game to play.

In last year’s pre-season match, Trailfinders won 26-20 against a different URC team, Zebre Parma, and after a positive block pre-season training this summer, the squad is eager to test itself this Saturday back in front of a home crowd.

It promises to be an exciting fixture on Saturday afternoon, and Trailfinders have a raft of players in the squad that fans should be excited about.

None more so perhaps than centre Reuben Bird-Tulloch, who was named as both last year’s player and coach’s player of the season. Tulloch captained England at age-grade rugby, and since joining Trailfinders from Northampton Saints, he has been ripping it up in the Championship and will be one to keep an eye on against Cardiff.

Another player it’s hard to look away from is last season’s top try scorer, Matt Cornish. The hooker is a fan favourite at Vallis Way in his second stint with the club and is a reliable presence in the Trailfinders pack, coupled with his special ability to find the try line.

Lastly, one more player to watch is a new signing for this season, second-row Sean Lonsdale. Lonsdale started his professional career with Exeter Chiefs before joining another Welsh side, the Dragons, in 2022. He’s a dynamic presence, standing at 6’4 and able to cover the back row. He will make a solid addition to the powerhouse pack at Trailfinders and will be keen to make an impression this Saturday.

The full match preview for Ealing Trailfinders v Hartpury University at TFSC this weekend.

About The Opposition

Hartpury University travel to TFSC sitting 6th in the Championship table, on the back of an impressive 54-34 win against an overachieving Ampthill side.

With five wins from ten games, the west country outfit have played some great attacking rugby away from the Alpas, with the second most points scored on their travels of any team in the league this campaign.

A standout for Hartpury this season has been Fly-Half Harry Bazalgette, who is currently top of the Championship point scoring chart.

What To Expect

Hartpury clearly play without fear on the road, as their scoring record shows, so they may well put up a stern test at Trailfinders Sports Club.

However, Trailfinders have an even more impressive defensive record at home, conceding the fewest points of any team in the league on their own turf.

Get down to TFSC to find out if Trailfinders can keep Hartpury out on Saturday.

The full match preview for Trailfinders Women’s trip to Stonex Stadium this Saturday to face Saracens in the Allianz PWR.

About The Opposition

Saracens currently top the Allianz PWR table with seven wins from eight possible this season.

They have scored more points than anyone else in the league whilst also conceding fewer than anyone else.

Despite these incredibly impressive statistics, Saracens host Trailfinders Women after their first loss of the campaign to fellow high flyers Gloucester-Hartpury. The win for the west-country side meant that the Cherry and Whites were left the only unbeaten side in the league.

What To Expect

Saracens had been ruthless in the league until their slip-up away to the reigning league champions.

Trailfinders Women will likely face a Sarries side looking to avenge that loss, meaning a stern test could be in store.

The full match preview for Ealing Trailfinders’ contest against Doncaster Knights at Trailfinders Sports Club.

About the Opposition

Doncaster Knights travel to TFSC, sitting fourth in the Championship following their 26-20 victory over Bedford Blues last weekend. They are still in the hunt for the league title, only three points off the top of the table.

The Knights have been good on their travels in the Championship, scoring the fifth most points of any side away from home. They also performed outstandingly during their trip to TFSC in the Premiership Rugby Cup.

The game was a nail-biter. Donny lost in the last kick due to a missed penalty from Billy McBryde.

What to Expect

Despite their favourable league position, Doncaster have been on the wrong end of some surprising results. They’ve already lost to Ampthill and Caldy this season, teams that were languishing towards the bottom of the table last campaign.

However, the Knights always pose a stern test to any team in the league. Coming with them to West London will be many ex-Trailfinders who now ply their trade in South Yorkshire, Jack Digby and Lewis Thiede, to name a couple.

The first men’s fixture of 2024 sees Ealing Trailfinders take on Caldy, in the first part of Saturday’s double-header at TFSC.

About the Opposition

Caldy have had a mixed-bag of a season so far, winning and losing three games each which leaves them ninth in the Championship.

The Wirral-based outfit travel to West London on the back of two impressive victories away at Ampthill (26-21), and most recently at home to Doncaster Knights (24-19), and so headed into the Christmas break on a high.

What To Expect

Matt Gallagher is the leading try-scorer at hooker for the Ravers, with the away XV set to bring a physical set-piece routine to the capital.

The honours between the two sides were split even last season, with a 26-24 away defeat followed up by a 73-14 thumping as Ealing ran in eleven tries. Saturday is set to be a more testing affair, however, with the visitors having notched up three wins in their last four games.
