RFU CHAMPIONSHIP – ROUND 9

Date: Saturday 10th December

Kick-Off: 2pm

Location: Paton Field, Caldy

Coverage: Live coverage of the game will be available via our Twitter feed and website

ABOUT THE OPPOSITION:

Originally founded in 1924 for former pupils of Calday Grange School, the club quickly progressed, much through the help of the club’s benefactor Sir Alfred Paton. In 1928, Paton gifted the club Thurstaston Hill, the land where the club still play and the original pavilion that was built almost 100 years ago, is still the core of the current clubhouse today.

In 1967, the club levelled up the slope outside the clubhouse to ensure a first-class 1st XV pitch despite the, at the time, £7,000 price tag! They joined the Giro bank North West league a year later, which was a forerunner to the National Leagues. They had mixed success up until 1996 when the Ravers decided to take a more professional approach to their team. Since then the club have won five league titles and were runners-up twice before being promoted to National 2 West in 2007. A decade later they went on a 28 game unbeaten run as they moved into National 1.

Last season, the title race went down to the wire and in the penultimate game, Caldy hosted local rivals Sale FC, both knowing a win would put them in pole position to go up. In front of a crowd of over 3,000, Caldy ran out 13-9 victors and secured their place in the Championship for the first time in their history.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

After being one of the unknown quantities coming into the league, Caldy have quickly become one of the trickiest sides to beat. Every single side who has travelled to Paton Field this year have struggled to deal with the conditions and vocal home crowd.

Close early losses against Hartpury, Nottingham and Ampthill and an impressive away win at Richmond put the new boys on the right path at the start of the season. As they moved into November, the Ravers looked to be losing their way somewhat, but a win against Ampthill in the cup helped put them back on track. When the league restarted, they became London Scottish’s first victims in the league as they lost 19-10 at the Athletic Ground, but they bounced back instantly, with a narrow win over Cornish Pirates in tricky conditions last weekend.

ABOUT THE OPPOSITION:

Bedford are one of the few clubs in the Championship who have previously been in the Premiership, having been in there in the 1998/99 and 1999/2000 seasons.

They dropped down to the Championship at the turn of the century and after mixed fortunes in the early 2000s, they appointed Mike Rayer as their Director of Rugby in 2005. Rayer, who had previously played at the club as well as at Cardiff, has been at the club ever since and is the longest serving professional Director of Rugby in the country, having gone on to coach over 500 games for the Blues.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

Bedford are known for being the great entertainers in the league, constantly looking to throw the ball around and currently have the second highest points scored in the league this season (only behind ourselves).

Despite a narrow 26-18 away loss to Coventry on the opening night, they bounced back to win their next three in a row, including an impressive 21-41 victory down at The Mennaye against Cornish Pirates.

They have however come unstuck against teams below them in the table, losing to Richmond at the end of October and then London Scottish in their Championship Cup opener.

Recently they have returned to form however, with strong performances against Coventry and Doncaster, before claiming a narrow 32-31 victory last Saturday against Nottingham.

LAST TIME WE MET:

Bedford travelled over to Ealing in mid-February knowing that the Trailfinders had not yet been beaten at home all season.

Ealing started the better of the two sides, scoring early though Simon Linsell but Matt Worley responded almost immediately for the Blues. Jan-Henning Campher then put Ealing in front again as he peeled off the back of a rolling maul, but then on the stroke of half-time Bedford hit back through now Trailfinder Ollie Newman, to make it 14-12 at the break.

After the interval Bedford came out of the blocks fast, scoring twice through prop Danny Hobbs-Awoyemi and hooker Jack Hughes to put them well in front.

Ealing did answer back through centre Matt Gordon but this was then cancelled out by Jamie Elliot as Bedford recorded a famous 19-31 victory.

RFU CHAMPIONSHIP – ROUND 8

Date: Saturday 3rd December

Kick-Off: 2.30pm

Location: The Mennaye, Cornwall

Tickets: Available from £19 – click here to purchase

Livestream: £7 – click here to purchase

Coverage: Live coverage of the game will be available via our Twitter feed and website

ABOUT THE OPPOSITION:

Originally founded in 1945, Cornish Pirates have become a real force in the English second-tier ever since they were promoted to the league in 2003. Upon the league’s rebrand to become the RFU Championship in 2009, Pirates really begun to challenge for promotion, finishing in the runners up spots in both the 2010/11 and 2011/12 seasons.

Although there was a slight dip during the mid-2010s which saw them ending up in the mid-table positions, recently they have refound their form, with them finishing third in the last two seasons. Last year, Cornish only lost four matches (the same number as ourselves) but it was their two draws which saw them lose points despite their superb end to the campaign.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

Travelling down to the Mennaye is always a tough ask for any opposition in the Championship and this weekend is no exception. Early defeats this year at Jersey Reds and Coventry and at home to Bedford Blues have been rectified and have seen the Pirates not lose in over a month and not lose at home in over two! Their recent 7-62 win at Richmond in particular proved the strength that they possess and it means this Saturday should be an exciting affair.

LAST TIME WE MET:

We faced Cornish Pirates three times last season, with each of us winning our home league games, it meant that the Championship Cup semi-final would be the decider.

We started the game well with Cam Terry crashing over on the back of a rolling maul, but Pirates answered back immediately through Rus Tuima.

The remainder of the first-half solely belonged to us, as Terry got his second, before Reuben Bird-Tulloch set up David Johnston and then Jordan Burns scored our fourth on the stroke of half-time.

With the score at the break being us 26-7 up, we always expected them to come back at us and despite two tries from the visitors, we secured our spot in the final as we ran out 36-26 victors.

ABOUT THE OPPOSITION:

Last season was a very tight campaign for Jersey as they finished 4th in the Championship, 11, 8 and 4 points behind ourselves (1st), Doncaster Knights (2nd) and Cornish Pirates (3rd) respectively. Although they have always been a strong side, the Reds were prone to the odd slip up, especially away from home, last year as they fell to seven defeats in the league last season.

This campaign however has been very different. Jersey have come out of the blocks firing and have nine wins from nine matches this season, a record which is only matched by ourselves! Such is the dominance of the two teams that we are both already two wins ahead of third placed Coventry in the league and both on maximum points in Championship Cup Pool 1.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

The Reds 100% start to the season has seen them put in some dominant performances, as well as winning some tight encounters. Early games against Ampthill, Coventry and London Scottish were all won relatively comfortably, but their first challenge came at the end of September as they welcomed Cornish Pirates to the Stade Santander International. It was an incredibly tight affair but eventually the hosts came out with a 21-10 victory.

A strong win against Caldy helped to put the Reds back on track but next came their toughest test so far. Doncaster Knights travelled to the island on a windy Friday night and almost claimed a result. With a minute left on the clock, Jersey were 19-12 in front but Doncaster managed to bundle over from close range. This left the Knights with a kick to draw the game, but the ball sailed just wide and the Reds kept their perfect record in tact.

November saw the start of the Championship Cup and with it came two strong performances against Nottingham and Hartpury. This weekend will see someone’s perfect record come to an end and it is a game not to be missed!

LAST TIME WE MET:

In early February we travelled over to Jersey for our league fixture midway through Storm Eunice. In what was understandably awful conditions, we had all the momentum in the first half and raced out to a 6-0 lead. A physical try from Roy Godfrey was almost countered by a third Craig Willis penalty, but then on the stroke of half-time a Jordon Holgate intercept score saw Jersey go in in front, leading 10-9.

Despite being behind, we remained calm in the second 40. An early Willis penalty was followed by a big rolling maul which allowed Jan-Henning Campher to crash over and make the scores 10-19. After absorbing a lot of pressure, a final late Craig Willis penalty all but secured the win, as we left Jersey, 10-22 winners.

After a strong display in Round 1 of the Championship Cup, we will look to carry this momentum forward as we travel to face Nottingham this weekend.

RFU CHAMPIONSHIP CUP – ROUND 2

Date: Sunday 13th November

Kick-Off: 3pm

Location: The Bay, Nottingham

Tickets: Available from £15 – click here to purchase

Coverage: Live coverage of the game will be available via our Twitter feed and website

ABOUT THE OPPOSITION:

After a tricky campaign last time out, Nottingham have been somewhat of the surprise package this season. Currently sitting fifth in the Championship table they have had some impressive wins against Doncaster Knights, Richmond and London Scottish, as well as running Cornish Pirates incredibly close.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

Nottingham are a side who always like to throw the ball around and have scored at least 30 points in four of the last five games that they have played, so this game promises to an exciting fixture. Despite this however, their Championship Cup campaign got off to a somewhat disappointing start last weekend from the Archer’s perspective. They came up against a high flying Jersey side at the Bay and after a strong opening ten minutes for the Reds, the hosts were never able to reel them back in as Jersey ran out 12-38 winners.

MATCH OFFICIALS:

Referee: Neil Chivers

Assistant Referee 1: Ian Bibey

Assistant Referee 2: Bill Burton

LAST TIME WE MET:

Our most recent encounter against the Archers came just a fortnight ago as we won 64-33 in an exciting encounter at Trailfinders Sports Club. We raced out to a significant first half lead, after Jonah Holmes scored a 17-minute hat trick while Jordan Burns and Reuben Bird-Tulloch both added long range scores to see us leading 33-0 at the break.

An early score after half-time from Burns looked as if it had put the game to bed, but Nottingham responded well scoring three tries in five minutes! This quick trio could have rattled some inside TFSC, but the players remained calm and settled back into the game.

Jack Grant had a debut to remember, coming off the bench scoring two tries and assisting another in what was a superb 15 minute cameo. Sadly we were unable to prevent two further Nottingham tries before full-time, as the game finished Ealing Trailfinders 64-33 Nottingham
