New-boy Bentley in squad for Rotherham trip
Jonny Bentley has gone straight into the squad for Ealing Trailfinders away match against Rotherham Titans in the British and Irish Cup on Saturday, having recently signed for the west London club.
The New Zealand-born fly-half is an experienced Greene King IPA Championship campaigner and has previously played for Cornish Pirates, Yorkshire Carnegie and Jersey.
“I am excited to be back in the Championship with Ealing Trailfinders and about the challenges ahead for the rest of the season, ” Bentley said.
“The coaches want to play an exciting, attacking brand of rugby which fits in with how I enjoy playing the game and there is a really good bunch of boys here. Hopefully I can make a positive contribution to the squad.”
The 29-year-old Bentley arrives from Wellington Lions in New Zealand and he will start the match at Clifton Lane on the bench.
“Jonny is someone we have been following over the past year and it's great to finally have him on board, ” Director of Coaching Ben Ward said. “He offers us more competition for the 10 shirt and a lot of experience that will be vital in the second half of the season.
“He has already showed some good touches in training and we are looking forward to seeing him play.”
Ealing Trailfinders are chasing their first victory over Rotherham Titans this season after losing 24-23 in the Greene King IPA Championship at Clifton Lane and 48-13 in the Cup.
In the pack Ward has made four changes, including bringing in second-row Paul Spivey for his first appearance of the season and he will link up with Adam Preocanin in the engine room.
Further forward Michael Holford will pack down at the coalface, alongside captain and hooker Rhys Lawrence and loose-head Will Davis. In the back-row Alex Bradley comes in on the open-side alongside number eight Chris York and Harrison Orr.
The back-line is unchanged from the most recent match, against Yorkshire Carnegie, in the league. That means that Alex Davies and Tristan Roberts will continue at scrum-half and fly-half with Joe Munro and Danny Barnes in the centres.
Behind them Callum Wilson and James Stephenson start on the wings, with Will Harries at full-back.
